Reading this book I was very excited however the writing is very elementary and basic whilst dealing with difficult and emotional topics. The end is somewhat surprising and perhaps a little too neat/coincidental, but it still manages to pull on the heartstrings and deliver on the emotional promise of the rest of the book. Centered around a real-life historical event that counts as the UK's largest loss of civilian life during the Second World War, Nineteen Steps shines a brilliant light on a dark moment in history. Sharing his memories of that tragic time with My London in 2022, Letchmere found that the Bethnal Green community ties ran deep, and in the aftermath of this loss, the “keep calm and carry on” spirit was alive and well.

In reality, reports of the incident and mass deaths were censored because the British government didn’t want its enemies to know the air raid had caused a fatal public panic. I don't really understand the hate around this book, because I thought it was a good story and I really enjoyed reading it. The first part does a nice job setting the stage, introducing the characters, and detailing the rhythms of everyday life in 1940s Bethnal Green without being too long or wordy. As people entered, a woman carrying a child tripped on the darkened staircase, causing those behind them to fall as well. Brown’s Nineteen Steps, inspired by her grandmother’s experience of the 1943 Bethnal Green tube disaster, was ghostwritten by author Kathleen McGurl and published on Tuesday. While there is a perpetual stream of books inspired by World War II, the story behind Millie Bobby Brown’s new novel, Nineteen Steps, is one you may not have heard before. Nineteen Steps is an eye-opening and heartbreaking account of life during World War II, focusing on the tragedy that was the Bethnal Green tube disaster.

So let me just say I have never cried reading a book before this one, and I also will never be reading another war book again. It also represented the greatest single loss of life on the tube system, but curiously didn’t involve a train or vehicle of any description - 173 were killed including 62 children with over 60 injured. After a chance encounter with Ray, an American airman stationed nearby, Nellie becomes enchanted with the idea of a broader world.
