Thus, adding (and potentially removing) tracks to an album is something that I have concern over since it tends to significantly alter the structure and sound of an album. This reissue is fantastic, the vinyl is of high quality and sounds amazing, the art work is beautiful and I'm glad to finally own this on Vinyl. Original album artwork has been expanded to a premium tip-on gatefold jacket for the first time with new 10-inch jacket art. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Nirvana's legendary 1991 release Nevermind, The album has been remastered from the original analog tapes. Quick note: This pair of reviews will strictly be covering the audio quality, extra tracks and overall presentation of both box sets.

Having successfully brought grunge to the mainstream with 1991’s airwave dominating Nevermind, and its lead anthem, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, Nirvana felt they needed to claw back some much needed punk rock credibility for 1993’s In Utero. Vocals are deep in the mix, drums are at the fore, guitar is up and down, and bass is almost at Raw Power levels of "feel it more than hear it. It’s still the same album, nothing sounds unrecognisable, but it is fascinating, and an absolute must-listen for die-hard Nirvana fans. I have also attempted to add tracks to other albums as well under the notion that they were intended to be included in the album during it’s release but for some reason were omitted (here I remain on the fence if Nirvana and Kurt actually wanted to end Nevermind on “Endless, Nameless”).

I think it is generally accepted that it’s best to use a master tape for such a process, if it is still available, since it seems to provide the benefit of making the reissue sound as close to the original as possible with the added benefit of providing a higher quality listening experience that is more in line with where the specifications of today’s technology are currently at. I don’t think that these jewel cases are made as sturdy as they used to be and that too is probably part of the problem here. Now I can only hope that Universal will re-visit the Nevermind boxset in a few years and come out with a discounted “We’re sorry about that last one, here’s a new version by the guys who did the In Utero box set” edition, and then we’ll all be set.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. It’s one of the better Nirvana live sets to be commercially released, definitely better than the Paramount concert that came with the Nevermind box set, but I still like the Reading Festival one more (although that’s generally considered to be one of the best live shows of all time, so that may not be a fair comparison). This version of Nirvana's In Utero features different mixes on the songs Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies. I feel it also, quite often, provides fans a higher quality listening experience depending on where the remaster comes from. Several years later I found myself finally wanting to get a replacement of it partly because I still like Nirvana but also because I felt I owed an amends to the band for losing my first copy of the album.
