Description

The autofocus system is also a tiny bit on the slow side, although only compared to higher-spec IXUS models, but it is accurate and reliable in most normal lighting conditions. Unfortunately its low light focusing is not nearly as reliable, and the AF assist lamp is quite feeble with an effective range of only about 1.5 metres. The flash is also a bit weak, leaving some dark corners in a four-metre-square room, but it does work well at closer range. Battery life is excellent, with the hefty 1000mAh lithium-ion rechargable giving a claimed 240 shots per charge. Camera settings include sound options, LCD brightness, card formatting, power saving, language options and a factory default reset. We were a little disappointed at the absence of the hints and tips option recently introduced on some of Canon’s other models, which displays short messages at the bottom of the screen describing the function of the currently selected menu item. The compact 4x zoom lens has a focal length range equivalent to 28-112mm, with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 – f/5.9. The monitor may not be the sharpest thing ever, but it is nice and bright, has a very wide viewing angle in all directions and an excellent anti-reflective surface. The IXUS 105 / SD1300 IS has two still image exposure modes – Auto and Program – and and a movie mode, selected using a three-position switch on the rear panel. In auto mode the camera automatically sets the exposure and uses a scene recognition algorithm to make better decisions about exposure settings than can be arrived at using light metering alone. The two crops above are taken from the IXUS 105 / SD1300 IS with the lens set to its maximum 20mm (112mm equivalent) focal length. In Program mode with the sensitivity set to 800 ISO the camera set an exposure of 1/13th of a second at f5.9.

Digital zoom available for still image and standard movie modes only. Optical zoom may not be available during movie recording. The top panel is home to the shutter release – a slightly raised big shiny silver button surrounded by a zoom collar. Right next to this is the on/off button – a stylized delta-shaped thing that, despite appearances to the contrary actually functions perfectly well. It’s flush-mounted but has a positive action. Archived from the original on 5 February 2010 . Retrieved 7 April 2010. Overall image quality from the IXUS 105 is good. Aside from an occasional overexposure, metering is fairly consistent, although, unlike with many other cameras which are led to underexpose by bright skies and other highlight details, the camera has a tendency to record the main subject faithfully at the expense of highlight detail. This tends to be the preferable option for many situations, although exposure compensation is on hand for when it isn’t. The flash can be forced on or off in most exposure modes and in Program mode there’s a slow synchro option for use as a fill-in in daylight shots. The IXUS 105 / SD1300 IS provides two methods for reducing red-eye, one physical and the other software-implemented. The Red-Eye lamp illuminates the Auto focus assist LED which is mounted directly above the lens just prior to a flash exposure. This causes the subject’s pupils to contract, reducing the likelihood of retinal reflections that cause red eye. If that doesn’t do the job Red-Eye Correction provides a software fix that can be implemented during shooting or subsequently.

Faulty Sony CCDs Fail in Dozens of Cameras? (Geoff Duncan, Digital Trends, 27 October 2005) [ dead link] As with our review of the IXUS 100 IS last year, pressing 'menu' brings up two folders on-screen with nice, clear type - the first containing the shooting menu, the second the more general purpose set up menu. The first folder offers a range of options including the ability to activate the digital zoom, call up grid lines on screen, i-Contrast, image stabilisation modes (continuous, shoot only, active when panning, or off), plus activate a date stamp if so desired. The second featured folder of the two contains the set up menu, offering the ability to tweak various sound and start up options - there's no longer an extraneous separate menu folder within the Canon series for doing this - plus format the card in use or reset all current settings.
