When I was putting together my first pamphlet, Gin & Tonic, one of the concerns I had was that the book wouldn’t be cohesive, that the poems I’d written really didn’t have anything to do with each other. I asked Peter Sansom (my editor at The Poetry Business) about this and he wasn’t concerned in the slightest: whether or not I’d intended it, the poems were supposed to be together. The things we obsess over tend to form clusters in our work, but it’s also a good idea to take these ideas and run with them. What are you interested in? What are your themes? How can you expand on these further? Generally, pamphlets are anywhere between 15-25 poems and a collection averages around 50 poems. It’s worth thinking about what ideas you want to incorporate within these parameters. You don't want to have to tear staples out because the paper wasn't aligned 15 chapbooks in, so be thorough. 🚨 5. Contracts sometimes stipulate that the right to publish a book belongs to the publisher unless the book goes out of print or sales fall below a certain level. This clause varies, but authors who want to try to revive a work by self-publishing can potentially regain their rights through the ‘out-of-print’ or ‘reversion of rights’ clause in their contracts. Before we dive in, remember – there’s no hurry to publish your first book, and you might never want to! Many poets prefer to share their poetry in different ways, such as performing, online or in magazines. Now, over to Phoebe… How do I choose which poems to go into my pamphlet? The cover of your book is what people are going to see first, so make it eye-catching. Whether you have a fully illustrated cover or decide to go with just text, there are multiple ways you can make your books stand out, including 48 Hour Books’ exclusive Diamond 3D Printing. I once heard the comedian Laura Davis say you should tell your second best joke at the start of your stand-up set and your best joke at the end. What does this have to do with poetry books? Maybe nothing. But I think what she means is that there should be a progression and that your most hard-hitting poems should be spaced away from each other. I try and mix up the poems I imagine yelling with the poems I imagine whispering.

Poetry continues to be a popular genre printed at 48 Hour Books and we’ve seen many different approaches to the art of poetry book printing. Since poetry is a diverse form of writing, you really have the freedom to conceptualize your book in a way that best represents your collection of poems. This can range from structure and formatting choices to visual aesthetic. In this poem, the author compares her situation to various objects. Our experiences in life can be compared to objects. For example, if someone is bright and cheery, we might compare her to a ray of sunshine. If someone is mean, we might compare those words to the hiss of a snake. In comparison to offset printing, print-on-demand is more cost-effective for smaller print runs, it's faster, and also means you won't need to store cardboard boxes full of books in your living room or basement. Instead, the printer sends books directly to customers! Compared to DIY chapbooks, print-on-demand ones are much sleeker and professionally finished, which inevitably lends your book a more serious look (not saying it should, but it does). Finally, its most obvious advantage over making your chapbooks at home is the simple truth that you also save tons of time you'd otherwise spend fiddling with a stapler and ruler. Traditional publishing: Chapbook contests We have a vast range of paper types to choose from depending on the content of your book. Our most popular paper types are below;

We understand that chapbooks don't traditionally get made with a huge production budget, but if you've got the funds, we always advise that you work with a professional book interior designer to prepare your chapbook. Head over to our post on poetry book layout to see how pros can really help your poems seize their readers' hearts. 4. Choose one of four publishing paths Lastly, make sure your manuscript is in the best possible condition before you send it to publishers. Publishing individual poems is a great way to get way to get your voice out there but a book is a more significant project and requires more time and attention. That said, you still have to be willing to edit after your manuscript is accepted. Platinum Blonde looks quite different now from when I submitted it. There was a section of around ten poems from the full manuscript that my editor liked, but that he felt weren’t in keeping with the general tone of the book. At first I was a bit nervous about this but ultimately I could see where the suggestion was coming from: it’s not that those poems weren’t good enough; they just didn’t make sense within the context of the rest of the book. Most edits are by negotiation between the editor and the writer and there is a large element of trust involved. There are also some poems from Gin & Tonic that I have edited and included in Platinum Blonde. I wasn’t sure about this at first, but I think there is a kind of progression in the book now from the older poems to the newer ones. The second kind of pamphlet is usually made up of a sequence of poems written on a single subject or in the same form. For example, Now You Can Look (The Emma Press, 2017) by Julia Bird is a pamphlet of poems that tell a story about a 20 th century artist, Knithoard (Happen Stance, 2019) by Claire Crowther is a pamphlet about knitting! If you have written a series of poems on a single subject or in one form, a pamphlet can be a good way to publish it. How do I structure my book?The more you write poems with support, the more comfortable you'll become to step out on your own and find your own voice. We hope these writing exercises help you take a step in that direction. Self-publishing a poetry book doesn’t have to be overwhelming. We’ve compiled actionable steps you can take to print and self-publish your poetry book: Here’s a few reputable chapbook contests to start you off (note that some of these accept prose, too):

Let's take a look at your options to help you decide. Old-school self-publishing: How to make a chapbook by hand The selective reading taste and punk sensibility of Jess Mariano (from Gilmore Girls) would lead him straight to your niche, DIY chapbook. (Warner Bros) Once you find your audience, start engaging with them! Join the groups, follow the members then create your own content. This online research will come in handy when planning your book marketing strategy. Most contests do charge an entry or ‘reading’ fee, so it’s up to you to verify that each is reputable, legitimate and not a scam contest. You also need to decide which contests’ prizes are worth the entry fees; this is a matter of a simple cost-benefit analysis. This advice goes for full-length collections, too. For my collection, Platinum Blonde, I set myself a target of 50 poems. I knew the book was completed when I had edited 50 of my poems (more or less) to my satisfaction. I also felt like I’d taken the themes of the book to their fullest potential: I’d moved into a different space psychologically and I felt I had said everything I wanted to say on those subjects. How do I choose a publisher?To create your own "A Haiku Year," think of a way to describe each of the twelve months. For each month you will write a haiku, which is a 3 line poem that consists of 17 syllables. We print a variety of different types of poetry books from leading poetry publishers around the world. Some of our most popular poetry book printing has seeb awards such as the Costa Book of the Year 2020. If you are looking for a high quality poetry book delivered in days then ImprintDigital.com are the book printers for you. Opaque - Also good for non-fiction books. As it is a heavier paper than the opaque 80gsm it is better for colour images as there will be less show through. It is more expensive than the opaque 80gsm but only by a little. Munken Bookwove Cream - This is the same paper as the Bookwove White but as the name suggests, this is the cream version. Again this paper is mostly used for novels and for making the spine of your book bigger.

Moral rights protect the bond between you and your work. They include the right for you to be associated with your work and prevent others from altering your work significantly. Examples include: The right to object to any unauthorised distortion or changes to your work that may prejudice your honour or reputation. Opaque - Good for nonfiction books and good for keeping the costs low. Opaque 80gsm is our cheapest paper and helps with cheap book printing if you are on a budget.Large publishing houses don’t really print chapbooks — their focus is on longer poetic collections. So if you’re hoping to place your chapbook with a publisher, you’ll need to find smaller presses specializing in poetry. Several accept direct submissions, so you need to use Google to your advantage to find the best options for you. A few examples include Big Game Press, Noemi Press, Dancing Girl Press and Letter Machine Editions (not open to submissions at the time of writing) in the US, and Maytree Press in the UK. You may also want to consider joining a writers’ union, like the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (WGGB), the Society of Authors (SoA) or the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), depending on where your poetry is published. The advice of such organisations can come in handy when you need contract vetting or legal advice. Pro tip: If you have a small following and want to grow it, a self-published chapbook could be perfect for you. However, if you're new to the poetry scene, consider waiting until you’ve published poetry in literary magazines, so your chapbook can attract more attention. Start by researching popular book design trends to stay up-to-date on what is selling on the shelves. Go to the poetry section at the store and look at book covers to see which ones resonate with you. Once you have a good idea of what you like, relay this information to your book cover designer.
