About this deal

On the palate, it is rich, softly sweet and smooth, perfectly balanced, with a long and elegant finish. The unique flavours that are the hallmark of Portugal's indigenous grape varieties have become its trump card.

The wine received its name, "port", in the latter half of the 17th century from the seaport city of Porto at the mouth of the Douro River, where much of the product was brought to market or for export to other countries in Europe. The nose of this remarkable Tawny Port is a harmonious marriage of flavours that have evolved and matured over two decades. Please use this section to instruct your driver on a specific place to leave the package(s) if the recipient is out, such as ‘If out leave with neighbour’. The Douro is one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world, and deservedly Portugal's best known, the Douro has quickly emerged to lead the way as the country's premium wine region and there is a real pioneering spirit amongst the winemakers here, port shippers included. A great choice for an endless array of desserts, such as toffee brownies, chocolate and pistachio pavé, or crostini of walnuts with chevre.

The Port has spent significant time aging so that the fruit is a little less dominant and in balance with the barrel notes. A Wine Champion 2023 and a ‘benchmark’ tawny, said Matthew Horsley, and ‘bang on the money’ according to Tim Sykes from our tasting panel. For many, 20 year old tawny offers the perfect combination of vibrant fruit and nutty, aged character. This rich and inviting bouquet is further enhanced by subtle oak nuances, a testament to the influence of the wooden casks in which it matured. As is normal with these aged tawnies, the La Rosa twenty year old has incredible length and is an ‘aristocrat’ of ports. It may not be reproduced in any way whatsoever without the prior consent of Waitrose Limited nor without due acknowledgement. This has spent 20 years in cask which has given it a warm rustic amber colour and powerful dried apple and apricot flavours which merge with soft spices and full and nutty on to a long and refined finish.
