About this deal

The book, the key to a doomsday device built shortly after the Second World War, invites trouble to Joe’s doorstep, from the Legacy Board – in the guise of Messrs Titwhistle and Cummerbund – to the mysterious, and sinister, Ruskinite monks. Kate will never forget the day she couldn't protect her younger brother Chris from a terrible attack, and the memory haunts her. But if one believes in God, a god who knows all that has happened, all that is happening, and all that is to come, then the decision was made long before you were ever offered the choice.

Just as blithe in its disregard of verisimilitude and generic constraint, Angelmaker flits between old-fashioned villains in London's East End and covert action in 1940s south Asia, arranging its whistlestop plot around the modern-day discovery of a weapon of mass destruction in the unlikely form of a skepful of clockwork bees.

To be fair, there are key themes in Angemaker which are very similar to The Gone Away World: Armageddon (whether actual or threatened). Even with the main characters, the reader still doesn’t understand the desires, wants, fears of the characters.

Thus, when I heard about this book, North's most recent release, The Angel Maker, I was over the moon with anticipation. Do you believe in coincidence or do you believe that every event is connected and not just happenstance but meant to have specific meaning to solving the puzzle? At one point in the book Katie (the sister) comes across a portrait of her brother made from photographs from over the years. Some of that pacing is likely because there are large number of characters for a novel of this length, and it takes a bit of time to get to know them and their troubles.

All the leads point back to two old cases: the gruesome attack on teenager Christopher Shaw, and the despicable crimes of a notorious serial killer who, legend had it, could see the future. A lot of books are fun to read for the plot; a smaller percentage display this artful mastery of the language.

Chris couldn’t quite shake the sensation that there were cogs turning below the surface of the world. He studied philosophy, sociology and politics at Clare College, Cambridge, and then worked in the film industry. Be forewarned that is a lot going on flashing back and forth with the timelines but the reader will find everything is relevant leading up to the shocking and surreal climatic ending!Someone in my book group pointed out that since the narrator is a clock maker that level of inane details in the narrative is somewhat justified and ‘in the character’. Evidence suggests there is a connection to Christopher Shaw who 17 years ago as a loner of a teenager is brutally attacked and though badly wounded he survives but inevitably carries deep scars.

Sometimes we even jump character midpage, and it began to feel like an elaborate house of cards that could take a spill at any moment. It has parts that will make you laugh out loud, huge amounts of suspense, action and criminal behavior with a tiny tiny dash of romance. But when her daughter is threatened and Kate can't quite SEE the threat, can she convince her husband that the violence threat from long ago has now resurfaced. Special thanks to NetGalley and Celadon Books for sharing this amazing digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest thoughts. On the other hand, I felt that there were too many POVs jumping around in different timelines as well. The breakthroughs and innovations that we uncover lead to new ways of thinking, new connections, and new industries. With Joe’s once-quiet world suddenly overrun by mad monks, psychopathic serial killers, scientific geniuses and threats to the future of conscious life in the universe, he realizes that the only way to survive is to muster the courage to fight, help Edie complete a mission she abandoned years ago and pick up his father’s old gun.
