About this deal

This is the first day I am going to look at my live as adventure and to think whatever I do I will get there in life, there is no correct way to do it . The atmosphere of the novel, set mostly on this wild Greek island, echoes strongly the classical tragedies of Greece. I absolutely felt every word on a deep level being that I too am as the title eloquently states a 40 somthing fkUp , but now I realize I am not alone and it's never too late to be what you might've been . Celia Walden, Telegraph The story of Nell Stevens’ struggle through her imperfect, messy life doesn’t just make brilliant fiction, it’s turning into a cultural revolution!

She always felt like a failure because you know she is forty something, she is single and doesn’t have a job or her own apartment. She is breezily depressed, chattily self-deprecating, and often funny, but the highly conversational tone keeps readers at arm’s length. Together they begin to help each other heal their aching hearts, cope with the loss of the lives they had planned, and push each other into new adventures and unexpected joys. Whilst sharing the flat with not only Edward and their dog, but also his two teenage sons, a surprise pregnancy test throws Nells World into a spin. She also decides to start an anonymous podcast and talk about what it’s like to start over at forty something and not have her life be where she thought it would be at this stage in her life. Michaelides takes a literary turn in his latest novel, employing an unreliable narrator, the structure of classical drama, and a self-conscious eye to dismantling the locked-room mystery. As much as I wanted it all, I didn’t get to tick all the boxes of perfect marriage, gorgeous kids, and successful career that I lusted over as at Twenty-Something dreamer.

The opener was definitely readable and worth continuing and I finished the book with a big smile on my face! There were some awkward conversations at the beginning with her mother as expected because her mum was still holding out hope for Nell to patch things up with her fiancée. All her single friends are now married with children, sky-high rents force her to rent a room in a stranger’s house and in a world of perfect instagram lives, she feels like a f ck up.A novel for any woman who wonders how the hell she got here, and why life isn't quite how she imagined it was going to be. Confessions of a Forty-Something Fck Up is perfect comfort reading for anyone who thinks life isn’t working out as they want it to, whether they’re forty, fourteen or eighty-four. It is easy to feel sorry for Nell, but at the same time we want her to develop some resilience and inner strength to rise above it all. All her single friends are happily married with children, sky-high rents force her to rent a room in a stranger's house, and in a world of perfect Instagram lives, she feels like a f**k up. Very funny, well written and insightful and was truly brought to life by Sally Phillips as the narrator.

I graduated from the University of Gloucestershire in 2019 with a First Class (Hons) degree in BA English Literature and Creative Writing. This book looks at that very situation with a good deal of humor and some insight into finding happiness.

Penelope or Nell as she prefers has moved back to the UK after breaking up with her American Fiancée. And as a side note, I have been thinking about Cricket and Nell’s activity and wonder if that’s a real thing because if it is, it’s fantastic! I really enjoyed this book and I felt like I can really connect with Nell as she tries to navigate life in her forties.

Că în ciuda faptului că în jurul tău se petrec tragedii, care te emoționează, tot e ok sa te văicărești și să fii nemulțumit de neplăcerile mărunte din viața ta, pentru că așa e firea umană. I wish this was more focused on the podcasts and what she actually says on them; we are told that she's getting these insane amount of followers but it's barely mentioned apart from as an anecdote and just doesn't feel well thought out. Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series , I have to say this was an even better and funnier read. There is nothing out there that’s I’ve found so far in literature for women like us and when I saw this book, I thought ‘about time!Mike Gayle, author of All The Lonely People Nell’s journey to mid-life happiness is hilarious, moving and filled with clear-eyed wisdom about what it means to be a woman of any age, proving that the best happy ever afters come when you fall in love with life.
