About this deal

I'm sure I'd have enjoyed this book no matter what, but listening to it with such a great narrator was a real treat. It's only the fact that I know Heyer also wrote The Talisman Ring and The Grand Sophy, both of which I love, that means this rather pales in comparison. It would be quite fun to have a modern movie made of this book - someone like Benedict Cumberbatch could carry Beauvallet's part very well. In 1929, with Beauvallet, he brokered terms which gave Georgette 15% on the first 3,000 copies sold, 20% on the next 7,000 copies and 25% on all copies sold above 10,000. Poor Beauvallet was, as it were, in my hands, and ever since has been viewed with dislike by myself.

Name stamp and date in front endpaper which also has top 2 inches cut away, light foxing in edges and prelims and rear endpaper and just into some pages. On one such occasion he is challenged by a Spanish ship which he quickly takes over, on board the Spanish ship is a Spanish nobleman and his beautiful feisty daughter Dominica. Dialogues were funny as usual, secondary characters quirky, the basic plot rather simple but nonetheless effective. Urgh, she's altogether a manipulative, deceitful, little baggage and I can't see what Nick saw in her. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. An entertaining tale from start to finish, with Nick's enterprising servant Joshua Dimmock providing invaluable support and Joshua's running commentary on his and Mad Nick's antics providing comic relief. Indeed she was not: she engratiated quickly too me, with her humour, tentative to manipulate people around her with more or less success. Nick gets what he needs but his typical good fortune leads him to something even better - after besting a Frenchman who was trying to steal his horse near the Spanish frontier, he discovers the man was the Chevalier de Guise, a courier for the powerful de Guise family who carries a secret, encrypted message to King Phillip in Spain. With the blessing of the Queen, Beauvallet sails the seas with the intention of plundering any Spanish ships that come the way of the tittle "Venture".

Having plundered their own ship, Beauvallet promises to take them with him the rest of the way to Spain. As his ship's Master says, he is "bird-eyed for opportunity, and blind to danger, and he laughs his way out of every peril. With his decision to stop at nothing to make Dominica his bride, he may have just taken on his most challenging adventure yet. I have 39 of her romances (she also wrote about eight detective books with the help of her detective husband, but I've not read any of them); there are about three or four I don't have, though I've read almost all of them.Set on Elizabethan waters with Francis Drake co-starring, it's clearly a new time for Heyer--but the prose itself seemed to deviate from Heyer's usual to try and "fit in" with the setting. Circumstances see him and his valet, the finicky, chatty Joshua, enter Spain from France with a Frenchman's papers, and the disguise is a tenuous one.
