About this deal

I loved James first book and I follow the podcasts and Instagram so I was really looking forward to this book but very disappointed.

Yet at the same time, Smith focuses a lot of providing stories about himself and relates that to how it can help you, which is neither good nor bad, but I believe it would have been better for him to more frequently have the reader in mind instead of himself. He doesn't blow smoke up your arse and tell you what you want to hear and he doesn't feed you bullshit. That said, there are still some good stuff here, like the part about brain plasticity and growth mentality (ok, one good thing). Also its ironic that he slates Joe wicks for suddenly becoming a chef when thats not what he is trained in yet he suddenly feels qualified to release guide book for life when he's a 30 year old middle class wealthy man and always has been (not always 30 obviously but you know what I mean)! All I saw were people saying that he was talking about social media and just packing a bag and travelling. It was finished within a couple days and I love what he has to say as far as making a life for oneself vs making a living. It’s a really easy read - it’s over 250 pages but actually there’s a huge amount of white space, the font is relatively large and you could easily read it in a day or two.

This book is full of contradictions, one minute he’s saying he believes people should leave their careers if they don’t align with their utopian vision of their future, the next he’s idolising people working in checkouts of supermarkets, admiring the nobility of it. I also don't agree with the author asking on Facebook to give him good reviews because someone has given him a one star review! This book was recommended by a sober group I am a member of, probably because the author is into health and fitness, and understands the psychology of behaviour and behaviour change. From his Facebook Lives with Brian the bird in Bondi to a brief stint as a JSA member during the first Bali competition where I learned all I need to know to maintain and improve my fitness level. Good for perhaps a teenager or someone in their early twenties who aren’t sure on what route to take in their lives.Every reference book he cites would be far better to read than this book (I haven't read them all but I have read a good proportion). With hard-hitting home truths and a helping of tough love, be prepared to reset your outlook, redefine your goals and unlock your potential.
