About this deal

Because in a market where provenance, tradition and heritage are some of the key drivers, who gives toss where an iconic beer is brewed, am I right? From the outset, with a CAMRA good beer guide in hands, I asked everyone to rate every beer that was encountered during the week long trips.

I bought four x 355ml bottles from Tesco today of what is now described on the label as “British Pale Ale and brewed in the UK, but failing to state precisely where.

With Interbrew breweries throughout the UK and in Europe it was inevitable that Bass would have to cut ties with its home.

our other shareholder, Carlsberg UK Holdings Limited, and any entity which replaces it as a shareholder (in whole or in part) from time to time (‘Carlsberg Shareholder’);We are part of a global group of companies. The watery rubbish sold as Draught Bass is a faint imitation of the glorious Daft Bass we swallowed 20 years ago. Subscribe to our newsletter, RateBeer Weekly, a must for understanding new people, places and beers in worldwide craft culture.Bass has been my favourite draught beer since I first realised, in my early twenties, that lager was for teenagers/hot weather/holidays (delete as appropriate). Meanwhile, those who prefer old-school beer are likely to give these a miss, or (see above) feel that their custom is not wanted. But all of those I’ve tasted strike me as wanting for the simple reason that they so obviously are trying very hard to be new, fresh, and interesting. You must also sign for the package damaged if you feel the goods have been damaged or tampered with.

As someone who had the misfortune to grow up in a Marstons area I can tell you that their entire portfolio is utterly mediocre at best. Marston’s PLC (the ultimate parent company of our shareholders, Marston’s Trading Limited) and any entity which replaces it as our shareholder (in whole or in part) from time to time; How Many Calories Are There in a Pint of Marston’s Pedigree? What has changed in recent times, because it certainly does not have the same flavour as it has always done. Shorn of its home ties, brewed where convenient, unloved by its new parents (it has apparently been up for sale by ABInbev since 2010) it now stumbles along, all the while withering on the vine.

Palm Breweries is one of the larger national companies in Belgium today, but recent years have been tough. I also crave the sulphury whiff which – equally frustratingly – Burton brewers have been successfully trying to eliminate from their beers for the last three decades or so. For like very few beers, great Burton Pale Ales have that quality that is so difficult to define: tasty yes, but moreishly drinkable too. It didn’t help that I hadn’t yet been on a rite of passage with beer at that point in my life, but goodness me. If it’s launching in December as stated, the new label – if there is a different one – will have been signed off months ago.
