About this deal

Ergonomic – For those who crochet often, or for long periods, an ergonomic hook can keep your hands from hurting. These usually have a larger handle that fits nicely into the hand. Fancy Materials: You might even stumble upon hooks made from unique materials like bamboo, glass, or even ceramic. These can add a touch of luxury and flair to your crochet if you’re into this sort of thing. Impact on Comfort Second, a crochet hook is a tool towards a result. We should stop and think first about what hook… whatever size that might be… is going to provide the desired result. We should use the hook recommendation listed in a pattern as a starting point, knowing that we may need to make an adjustment. An adjustment could be changing a hook or accepting that the finished item might be smaller or larger than planned (and use a different yarn quantity than expected).

You will often see a hook size recommended on the ball band, though sometimes it will only suggest a knitting needle size and ignore us crocheters all together. The easiest way to end crochet hook confusion is to understand the difference between “measurement” and “label”. Ultimately, the size of a crochet hook is determined by the diameter of its shaft. The shaft is the area on the hook where the yarn loop is formed. Inline hooks have the point in line with the shaft, while tapered hooks will have their point not inline with the shaft. On a tapered hook, the point can be either above or below the shaft’s “line”. Aluminum – Boye and Bates are two of the common makers of these types of hooks. Most of us start out with a basic set of aluminum hooks. These are a wonderful and cost effective way to get many of the sizes you will need to start crocheting.Your pattern will tell you exactly which crochet hook to use. But, you may need to make some adjustments, based on your own personal tension (how tightly/loosely you hold the yarn) to find the best crochet hook for the job. Just as you put thought into choosing the right yarn for your project, choosing the right hook should not be overlooked. There are at least 3 common ways to denote a hook size – a metric millimetre sizing, a US letter (sometimes a number) or a UK number are the most common. That’s before we look at Japanese sizes, lace weight hooks and aluminium vs steel hooks too.

Note that I have not done a whole lot of projects using lace weight yarn or thread so my experience there is limited and I have deferred to CYC standards) A hook gauge tool is one of the simplest ways, but it requires you to have it in your supply closet. A hook gauge tool is a small plastic or metal card with holes that match the most popular crochet hook and/or knitting needle sizes. This specific tool is also useful for measuring your 4″x4″ swatch gauges. Measure the Hook Metric Sizes: In the metric system, crochet hook sizes are measured in millimeters (mm). This one is straightforward. The size tells you exactly how wide the hook is in millimeters. To further add to the confusion, not all hook sizes have the equivalent depending on which terms you use. For example, a size 4.5mm hook has no real American letter size (although some call it a G+), and is commonly referred to as a size 7 in both the US and the UK. Not to be confused with a 7mm hook, which does not have an American letter OR a UK number. Oy!

Let's be friends!

The UK method of sizing crochet hooks uses numbers. The smaller the number, the larger the hook. Confusing? I know. Hook sizes are measured either by their letter in the alphabet, or by their size in millimeters starting with the smallest. I personally use the letters, but that also depends on where in the world you live.
