If you loved Her Heart for a Compass, you will love A Most Intriguing Lady’ Sunday Times bestselling author Fern Britton Lady Mary Montagu Douglas Scott wants more from life than what is traditionally expected of the daughters of nobility in the Victorian era; marriage and servitude to her husband are not for her.

Proprio durante questo evento conosce il colonnello Trefusis, un uomo singolare che nasconde molti segreti e ha uno spirito indomito, lo stesso che anima Mary cacciandola spesso nei guai. At a party at Drumlanrig Castle, Mary meets the handsome, distinguished war veteran, Colonel Walter Trefusis, and finds her powers of deduction tested.

In the last two weeks,” Mary said, “we’ve gone for several walks, and taken tea with your aunt twice, and though she wasn’t there one of the times – it’s almost as if you don’t want to be alone with me.” Although the plot was not riveting I do get the vibe of authenticity as the Duchess of York has lived this life and it is captured in the setting’s beautifully. It was written in collaboration with Mills & Boon regular Marguerite Kaye and they have paired up again for A Most Intriguing Lady, an historical romance-whodunnit hybrid. Despite the Duchess of York telling Town & Country magazine “this is going to make Fifty Shades of Grey just a walk in the park,” let me reassure those of a tender sensibility that although there is kissing, sighing and so forth it’s all splendidly vanilla – unless you misread the reference to delving inside the grouse butt. A fantastic historical mystery with plenty of passion as you would expect from the Duchess of York. A triumph!" — Roma Downey OBE, actress, producer and New York Times bestselling author Tre swore, dragging his mouth away. “That,” he said raggedly, “is why we should not be here. I will not risk losing control and foisting a child on you when you haven’t even decided whether you want to be a wife, let alone a mother.”

The writing flowed well and with charm, building the era and clothing and world without overdoing it. The romance, too, was well-paced, helped by the time jumps that spread it over a few years. The time was necessary as both characters needed to learn more about themselves, to grow, to find what was important. Impressively, they used that time to learn to communicate, too. Let's face it; that is a rare thing in a romance. While it’s certainly a big relief to have that cleared up, I can prevaricate no longer; time to assess the merits of A Most Intriguing Lady. A fantastic historical mystery with plenty of passion as you would expect from the Duchess of York. A triumph’ This is the second book in the series, by Sarah Ferguson and Marguerite Kaye, but is a standalone story the first being about Mary’s older sister Margaret. I’d now be interested to look out the rest of the series.

The leaded windows were covered in fine white dust from the newly plastered walls. There was a faint smell of whitewash and timber shavings.
