About this deal

Professor Matthew Pateman, head of English and creative arts at Edge Hill University, first caught on to Buffy as a lecturer in his late 20s. He began including it as part of a popular culture class he taught in the early 2000s, then later in 2006 made it a core feature of his "televisual narratives" module. He has subsequently written a book, The Aesthetics of Culture in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, along with a book about Whedon's work. "It felt like a really smart, witty, well put together and incredibly fresh piece of television unlike anything else that I was aware of at the time," Pateman tells BBC Culture. Sure, it was mostly set in a high school but compared to the in-some-ways equivalent Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, it took its audience more seriously, with its dark humour and complex characterisation. "It felt like it was saying, 'we think you are interesting, grown-up people who want to be interested in interesting grown-up things,'" says Pateman. In Brazil the standard color system is not PAL, but PAL-M which is also 24 frames per second. In addition to that, all DVD releases, despite being Region 4 are in NTSC, so the frame rate is also 24 frames per second. Commentary on "Wild at Heart" by creator Joss Whedon, writer Marti Noxon and actor Seth Green (Region 1 only) SunnydaleArchives (4 March 2015). "What's Wrong with Buffy's HD?". YouTube. Although the canonicity of these creations aren't always confirmed, notably the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight and its following seasons have been produced as the direct continuation of the series in comic form.

The series' narrative revolves around Buffy and her friends, the Scooby Gang, who struggle to balance the fight against supernatural evils with their complex social lives in the fictional city of Sunnydale. The show mixes complex, season-long storylines with a villain-of-the-week format; a typical episode contains one or more villains, or supernatural phenomena, that are thwarted or defeated by the end of the episode. Though elements and relationships are explored and ongoing subplots are included, the show focuses primarily on Buffy and her role as an archetypal heroine of the Slayer. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in serialized format, with each episode involving a self-contained story while contributing to a larger storyline, broken down into season-long narratives marked by the rise and defeat of a powerful antagonist, commonly referred to as the Big Bad. While the show is mainly a drama with frequent comic relief, most episodes are a blend of different genres, including horror, martial arts, romance, melodrama, farce, science fiction, comedy, and even, in one episode, musical comedy. His character could have probably benefitted from the greater self-introspection that the writers afforded to Buffy, Willow, Anya, Angel, Oz and Spike – and maybe even some training. "All these powerful people around, and Xander didn't even think for a second, 'let me take a self-defence class," adds Barbé-Brown. "Nor does he really apologise ever for anything he does or to any of the women in it."

Side guide

Beginning in season four, the Region 2 and 4 DVDs include an open matte 16:9 version of the television show. The Region 1 DVDs include the standard format (4:3) version. I only started to watch Buffy recently, 20 years after the first episode was aired, got to say I am very impressed. Now remember this is 2017, people are used to 1080p streaming, Blu-ray / 4K video, and HDMA sound quality, 480i, 2 channel sound and 1.33:1 screen ratio are simply not going to cut it anymore. However, in this case, despite the huge technical disadvantages, Buffy still stands out as a serious and entertaining show, one of the best of its kind. The screen-play are well written, characters well developed, dialogues are actually interesting and thought provoking, plus great acting all around. Joss Whedon is a real genius. The reason for this difference is that the Region 2 and 4 DVDs were released before the Region 1 DVDs, with less involvement from Mutant Enemy Productions. When the Region 1 DVDs were released, Joss Whedon decided that they should not have the widescreen version. This even applies to the final episode of season five, " The Gift", in which the "previously" scenes are a montage leading into the episode itself. This montage was deleted from "The Gift" on the Region 1 DVDs. This montage was later included as an easter egg on the Season 7 DVD set, even in Region 2 and 4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered on the WB network in 1997 and eventually became an enormous success. Popularizing a particular genre of TV horror, which involved young adults and/or 20-somethings being put into supernatural situations, it was the beginning of a trend that continues to this day. It also made many of its actors into stars, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, and put its creator Joss Whedon on the creative map. Countless pieces of merchandise were spawned and the series is still popular amongst its long-time fans. It also continues to be held high as a well-produced piece of television that managed to sink its fans into pop culture forever.

The Region 2 and 4 DVDs play the episodes at 4% faster than the Region 1 DVDs. This reduces the running time of each episode by about two minutes (not counting the "scenes from previous episodes"). It also causes the sound to be raised by two-thirds of a semitone. For example, a C note is raised to a note two-thirds of the way from C to C♯. Based on the TV show, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series has expanded into licensed comics, novels, and video games. These stories either adapt aired episodes, fill spaces between stories, or offer a continuity to the series, often involving the original cast and crew. Josef Adalian and Michael Schneider, "WB revisits glory days." Variety, June 29, 2006. Archived from the original on March 18, 2009. Capitalizing on the twentieth anniversary of the show’s premiere, 20th Century Fox has released a new boxed set of The Complete Series on DVD. For you fans paying attention, this is basically a reprinting and contains the exact same Region 1 discs as before with nothing much new added. The video and audio quality are the same, the latter of which is featured in English and French 2.0 Dolby Digital for Seasons 1 and 2; English, French, and Spanish 2.0 Dolby Digital for Seasons 3 through 7; and English and Spanish subtitles for all seasons. Although the quality of the CGI in the show is questionable, the show still looks and sounds good and holds up well in standard definition.Script-writing was done by Mutant Enemy Productions, a production company created by Whedon in 1997. The writers with the most writing credits are Joss Whedon, Steven S. DeKnight, Jane Espenson, David Fury, Drew Goddard, Drew Greenberg, David Greenwalt, Rebecca Rand Kirshner, Marti Noxon, and Doug Petrie. Other authors with writing credits include Dean Batali, Carl Ellsworth, Tracey Forbes, Ashley Gable, Howard Gordon, Diego Gutierrez, Elin Hampton, Rob Des Hotel, Matt Kiene, Ty King, Thomas A. Swyden, Joe Reinkemeyer, Dana Reston, and Dan Vebber.

In Region 2, there have been several single-disc releases named after individual characters from the show, under the overarching title of "The Slayer Collection". Each contains four episodes and a character profile. The Spike-centric DVD contains the same episodes as the Region 1 "Love is Hell" collection. Other discs focus on Willow, Xander, Giles, Cordelia, Dawn, Angel, and Faith. Love film and TV? Join BBC Culture Film and TV Club on Facebook, a community for cinephiles all over the world. The series began on March 10, 1997 and ran for seven years until May 20, 2003. In that time, 144 episodes of the series aired. Arielle Duhaime-Ross, "Fox's sad attempt at revamping Buffy is ruining the slayer." The Verge, December 15, 2014. For better and for worse, the centring of the show on the Scooby Gang showed how much the so-called Chosen One needed her chosen people, even if the narrator states at the beginning of each episode, "she alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness". At every turn, the writers counter that narrative. Indeed, Buffy loses her Chosen One status, ending up sharing her mantle with Kendra and later Faith (Elisha Dushku) before every Potential Slayer is activated in the final season. The fact that she and all these Slayers, along with the Scooby Gang and Sunnydale residents, team up in the finale to close for good the Hellmouth (that's the demonic portal between Earth and Hell, for the uninitiated) suggests that saving the world never needed to be a one-woman job. "One of the brilliant things was that idea that the lone superhero would be absolutely no good," says Pateman. "She has to be part of a team."

In the Region 2 and 4 releases, episodes with commentaries include two English subtitles: the show itself, and the commentary. The Region 1 releases do not offer subtitles for the commentaries. Interview with Joss Whedon by SF Said." Shebytches.com. Archived from the original on May 12, 2010. Buffy the Vampire Slayer first aired on March 10, 1997 as a mid season replacement for the show Savannah on The WB network, and played a key role in the growth of the Warner Bros. television network in its early years. [8] After five seasons, it transferred to the United Paramount Network ( UPN) for its final two seasons. What is very clear is that both old fans and new are more than willing, like Gellar, to separate the show from its creator. "I still think it's a really good hearted, smart, influential, inspiring show," says Darke. "Fans have refused to let Whedon sour the show for them. It's like, 'well, actually, it's not yours anymore. It's ours'."

The Region 1 DVDs also offer a smaller choice of non-English languages subtitles than the Region 2 and 4 DVDs.The speeds of the different region DVDs match the speeds used during the original television broadcasts in the respective countries. Thus the Region 1 DVD plays the video at the same speed as the American broadcasts (which is the speed at which the show was filmed), while the Region 2 and 4 DVDs plays the video at the slightly faster speed that was used during the original British broadcasts. This effect is not particular to the Buffy DVDs but affects all television shows, because film that uses 23.976 frames per second is sped up for PAL that uses 25 (in the 30fps NTSC standard it is subject to 3:2 pulldown and there is no speed variation). But since the signal from a DVD player is ultimately analog, the Region 2 and 4 DVDs will still play at the faster speed when played on an American television with a multi-region DVD. In 2011 Netflix began streaming seasons 4–7 in the 16:9 ratio, but would ultimately revert to the 4:3 ratio. In Nordic Region 2 countries Netflix streams those seasons in 4:3 ratio, despite the local DVDs being in widescreen. As a season this one is much more fully realised than the first and for novice Buffy watchers would probably serve as a better introduction to the series. It is still cited by some as the best season in the show's run and it certainly shows the full range of the regular cast particularly Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz. Stand-out episodes from this season include 'Innocence', 'Passion' and the two part finale 'Becoming'. It is also the season that introduces characters that become key in later seasons such as Spike, Oz and Drusilla.
