About this deal

Caroline's skincare, adult acne, retinol and double cleansing 'cheat sheets' are like a bible for beauty enthusiasts, and her non-nonsense attitude when it comes to the effectiveness of products or brands has won her a legion of fiercely loyal fans. So when she recommends a product, it’s definitely worth investigating — like the K-Beauty brand cleanser she's previously hailed her "product of the year." Such procedures have become normalised – does that bother her? “No, why would it?” she says. “I’m not interested in putting shame on people, especially women. I think we could do with a bit more regulation – legally, there’s nothing to stop me giving you Botox or fillers.” ‘Clean’ beauty is probably my No 1 target ... It’s disingenuous – it was started by white, wealthy women in California If what you are doing works for your skin, don’t listen to people like me. I am not trying to change what people do if it is working. Why would I get involved? I come in when people are unhappy with their skin and need a little boost. Except for if you’re still using face wipes to cleanse. I’m stepping in at that point.’ Does she not think it puts pressure on women who don’t want to have it done? She takes a rare pause. “That’s down to someone’s self-esteem. I don’t want to have a facelift; seeing Jane Fonda doesn’t make me feel bad. Jane Fonda looks fantastic with her facelift, but I don’t feel bad because I don’t want one. No one’s trying to make you feel bad, certainly not coming from my camp. Obviously, there is a side of the industry that’s … I can’t understand why anyone would have liposuction, for example, but if someone wants to, it’s none of my business.” This is the time to really cater to your skin’s needs. Serums are designed to deliver a concentration of active ingredients. “The active ingredient you want will depend on the condition that you want to treat,” Hirons says. Though, in winter or if you have dry skin, you might want to add an oil after your serum.

Caroline Hirons is the authority in skincare – and for the first time, she’s sharing her knowledge with the world. With over 100 million views of her blog and over 13 million views of her YouTube videos, she cuts out the jargon, tells you what you do and don’t need, and is finally going to get the nation off face wipes for good! Our skin is the biggest organ in your body, and it deserves a bit of attention. But that doesn’t mean we all need to be scientists. Get into a few good habits with a daily routine and you’ll soon see the benefits. A routine is the foundation of everything. And if you get it right, you can set your skin up for life. Make it a habit. Morning and evening, for 2–3 minutes, or longer if you want to take the time to enjoy it. Make sure you take the time. Regulating your temperature, by opening and closing blood vessels, and perspiring to allow sweat to evaporate and cool us down.Caroline Hirons is the authority in skincare - and for the first time, she's sharing her knowledge with the world. Some of my earliest memories are of my grandmother religiously removing her makeup before bed. It was as hypnotising as it was methodical. Eyes first, in her bedroom mirror, then a full facial cleanse at the bathroom sink. The message was always the same: take care of your skin. It was non-negotiable. That message was passed down to my mum, who in turn made sure I heard it loud and clear. The first time I asked if I could buy some makeup, Mum said, ‘Yes, once you’ve shown me you can take care of your skin.’ That seemed a fair deal to get my hands on my first pot of Bourjois blush. Eventually realising that I was a square peg in a round corporate hole, I started my own consultation business in 2009. My (at the time undiagnosed) ADHD would frequently land me in hot water as an employee, but as an independent consultant I was paid to tell brands what they needed to hear, not what they wanted to hear. As my husband once said, ‘Who would have thought that being gobby and opinionated would become a career?’ Your skin is incredible. Whether you’re a bright young thing without a wrinkle in sight, someone who’s struggled with acne their entire lives, or an older person in the first flushes of menopause wondering what the hell’s going on with your complexion, your skin is still a miracle of nature. It’s hard at work every day underneath all the grease, sweat, dirt, pollution, makeup and gunk. The internet's authority on skincare, Caroline Hiron's debut non-fiction book is a no nonsense guide to skincare - and getting the nation off face wipes for good.' - Evening Standard Online Hirons has worked in skincare for almost 25 years. She grew up in Liverpool (with a brief spell in the US), where her mother and grandmother worked on department store beauty counters. As a child, she remembers going to visit her grandmother, who worked on the Guerlain fragrance counter, “so she always smelled incredible. We’re talking early 70s, 80s, so they always looked immaculate, all had full uniforms.”

This is the outermost part of the skin, and the bit that you see. It’s made up of keratinocytes (our skin cells), and is the part of you that keeps bacteria at bay. It’s your first line of defence.

From what I can gather about Hirons, she knows her stuff and cares and uses language that us meer skincare virgins can understand.Use a good quality vitamin C daily. It’s great for day wear because the antioxidants help ward off the damage caused by pollution. It’s also great for use in the evening because of its repair function – just don’t mix with retinol, they don’t work well together. Use an oil-based vitamin C product if you want an instant glow and all stable vitamin C products help boost your collagen production. It’s important to use it topically since supplements come with no guarantee that they’ll make it to your skin.’ 9. Avoid Stress I didn’t expect anything less than brilliant and was not disappointed. I absolutely love this book. Hirons has a way to share well-known information in an eye opening way. Hirons recently referred someone who had been sending abusive messages to her to the Metropolitan police. “I wasn’t going to, but a family friend works for the Met and was like: ‘You need to give this to us, because that’s actually a threat,’” she says. “I was like: ‘Oh, OK. I get these all the time.’” She smiles. “I’m not so fragile that I care what you think about me – I mean that in the healthiest way and I wish the same for everyone. I don’t think I would have lasted as long online if I was concerned every time someone called me old. They always go for old, as if I give a shit. Or fat. Actually, I’m 5ft 11in – I’m not that fat. Calm down.” She laughs. The skin barrier of darker skin can be more prone to disruption through a process of trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), because of lower levels of ceramides in the stratum corneum. This means skin can feel rough and dry. When choosing moisturisers, those with darker skin may find it helpful to use products that contain natural moisturising factors (NMF), or are labelled as ‘barrier repair’ or ‘ceramide’ cream.

People think that great skin is all about skincare but it’s about what you do to yourself too. Do not smoke. It destroys your collagen, depletes the oxygen levels in your skin and in doing so hinders nutrients getting to it too. It’s atrocious for your skin. I can’t emphasise that enough.’ 7. Eat Well When I talk about ‘bookends’ in this chapter (and in skincare in general), I mean cleansing and moisturising. Start with a good cleanse to prep your skin, and finish with an appropriate moisturiser to seal it all in and protect your skin.

7. Eat Well

By 2009, she had set up her own consultancy business, advising beauty brands. Social media was taking off and Hirons would give people the same advice she dispensed on the beauty counters – instead of selling them an expensive foundation, she would steer them towards products that could help their skin. “Then someone said: ‘Just blog it,’ and I did.” They were joking in parliament about getting haircuts and we had people crying because they couldn’t feed their kids Our next lesson was to keep our face out of the shower. The water is too hot and instead tepid water should be used when cleansing. We also switched out our foaming cleansers for a balm, cream, milk or gel formula. I’m not saying don’t have a little bit of what you fancy, but you could start by taking a probiotic. It’s something most skin experts agree on, from dermatologists to GPs to health specialists. Not eating well shows on your skin. Sugar, in particular, has a big effect. Sugar causes glycation, a process that destroys collagen.’ 8. Use A Good Vitamin C
