About this deal

If you consider how many places received his fish, how many went on to become the sought after lookers? How many of these went on to spawn successfully? Yes. The reason we have the fish we have today is purely through unnatural selection. Left alone all lakes would be full of long skinny 12lb Wildie commons. I have a poignant picture of a perfect zip I caught it on a weekend, the next weekend I went,I found it in three separate parts, near the dead tree swim,on the high bank,I remember the body part regeneration on its tail as if it was yesterday.. Chris Ball doesn't have the Leney records. They belong to Chris Yates and are currently here at home, on loan to me... Wales has a huge number of commercial fisheries and smaller stillwaters holding carp, you can find these here on our interactive map. Specimen Waters

Scientists believe a carp’s eyesight is not as effective in low water temperatures, and that yellow is the colour they find easiest to spot. That’s the theory, anyway, on why corn (most likely to be a plastic imitation grain of corn these days) and small yellow boilies, usually pineapple flavor, come into their own in the colder months. Makes me wonder places like these. I know a few Stately homes, one of which is dear to my heart, fished it as a kid. Used to catch tiny carp in the early 80s on maggot which had to be from successful breeding contrary what people believe because until a fish kill from effluent in the early 90s to my knowledge nobody had ever put anything into it. Makes me wonder the bloodline of carp and how long they could actually survive for if they are breeding. Lake mentioned had no pike in it either which is surprising really so not such much predication other than herons etc. Zig rigs fished higher up the water are another winter method, as carp sometimes suspend themselves in the mid levels over the deepest waters in a lake, almost in a form of suspended animation. A zig is worth a try should bottom methods fail.Today, however, carp fishing in Wales is booming, with the country home to an ever increasing number and variety of carp fisheries, all driven by angling demand for this obliging, hard fighting fish. Carp baits and tactics for winter I mentioned before, once or twice,I'm well into history, ive been privvy to stuff, that no one will ever know about..ie BM

There’s also places that are not really viable to fish and would need some serious time and dedication but I am certain the rewards are there, even if they are just uncaught fish, size regardless Indeed I believe Maylin got most of the contents for the Big Carp book over the phone, so I would think there is the possibility of more than one error. Another big fish venue is White Springs near Swansea, which has produced a Mirror carp of 45lb 2oz. Voted the best carp fishery in Wales by readers of Anglers’ Mail magazine, White Springs is home to several other fish around 40lb. I'm meant to be fishing there soon,again..but not now,due to this awful virus....my heart and prayers to everyone, at this time,I'm still gutted I won't be going now.. I am not sure the Pete Springate Big Carp Legends book was that accurate, certainly when I spoke to Keith Jenkins, Pete was very keen to do his story properly, hence the trilogy brought out by Freebird publishing.I’m rambling! I agree with you, the progeny have often not lived up to the original. The chance was missed.

The lakes, were terribly ottered and a Alfa slurry tank disaster did for the lakes health, sadly its now shut as a fishery, and used purely for aesthetic hot tub holidays...urrrrrrhhhhhh..

Thanks for that Goose - I think of Redmire these days as being like a National Trust property (I worked for NT for fifteen years). It's a pastiche in many ways these days of times gone by and the impacts of that time are painfully evident, from the built swims to the new otter fence and the changes in landscape management around the pool that made the restoration work necessary.... But there is still an underlying magic there and that sense of history. If you are planning on targeting carp from a commercial fishery, where the carp are likely to be smaller in size, but present in greater numbers, one of the most effective tactics is to fish a method feeder. There are numerous pellets and groundbaits designed to mold around a feeder, plus as many hookbaits. The most effective are pellets, mini boilies, dead maggots, corn or luncheon meat. A butler friend of mine once showed me some pictures of estate workers holding fish (for a laugh) during the drain down of an estate lake about 20 years ago, 3 or 4 different fish all well over 40 !! Apparently there were much bigger but they couldn't get hold of them There is also a small water down Kernow, which was reptuted to have wildies, not ferals but proper wildies, the ones with the prominent notch, like welsh wildies...I have caught one of these too... The Caerphilly Castle Moat is an iconic Welsh carp venue, this now holds plentiful 20’s and several fish over the magical 30lb mark, to a record 31lb 2oz.
