About this deal

Good Friday, April 8, 1887: Joseph Barnett meets Mary Jane Kelly for the first time in Commercial Street. He takes her for a drink and arranges to meet her the following day. At their second meeting they arrange to live together. Mrs. Phoenix says that "She was Welsh and that her parents, who had discarded her, still lived in Cardiff, from which place she came. But on occasions she declared that she was Irish." She added that Mary Jane was very abusive and quarrelsome when she was drunk but "one of the most decent and nice girls you could meet when sober." The right arm was slightly abducted from the body and rested on the mattress. The elbow was bent, the forearm supine with the fingers clenched. The legs were wide apart, the left thigh at right angles to the trunk and the right forming an obtuse angle with the pubes.

The Whitechapel Society presents: A forensic linguistic analysis of the Ripper letters with Dr Andrea Nini

The first census in which Thomas would appear would be that of 1871 and indeed we find a listing of his family resident at 14 Albert Street, St Mary Newington, London: PM: City PC Louis Robinson comes across Eddowes surrounded by a crowd outside 29 Aldgate High Street. She is very drunk and laying in a heap on the pavement. Robinson asks those in the crowd if anyone knew her, no one replied. He pulled her up to her feet and leaned her against the building's shutters but she slipped sideways. With the aid of City PC 959 George Simmons they brought her to Bishopsgate Police Station.Louis Robinson City Police Constable 931 said at Kate's inquest 'On the 29th at 8.30 I was on duty in Aldgate Hight Street, I saw a crowd of persons outside No. 29 - I saw there a woman whom I have since recognised as the Deceased lying on the footway drunk. I asked if there was one that knew her or knew where she lived but I got no answer.' In this episode Karl welcomes Lesley Quinn to the show to discuss the next story in the Doyle canon: Thursday-Friday, November 8-9: Almost every day after the split, Barnett would visit Mary Jane. On Friday the ninth he stops between 7:30 and 7:45 PM. He says she is in the company of another woman who lives in Miller's Court. This may have been Lizzie Albrook who lived at 2 Miller's Court. About half an inch from the top of the nose was another oblique cut. There was a cut on the right angle of the mouth as if the cut of a point of a knife. The cut extended an inch and a half, parallel with the lower lip.

We are pleased to bring to you the Speaker Presentations from the 2023 East End Conference held over the weekend of 7 & 8 October in the Astronomer Pub in Middlesex Street in the East End of London. There was a stab of about an inch on the left groin. This was done by a pointed instrument. Below this was a cut of three inches going through all tissues making a wound of the peritoneum about the same extent. But out of respect to the outstanding work by Johnathan Tye and Jurriaan, I am somewhat reluctant to say too much at this point, for fear of stepping on other people's toes.

Our knowledge of Cross is limited to the surviving police records, which are basic and uninformative, and the sometimes contradictory newspaper articles in which he is briefly mentioned. The official records for the Nichols Inquest have not been found. In reporting the inquest on 4 September, 1888, The Times gave Cross’s first name as George. Other newspapers suggested Charles A., Charles Andrew or Charles Allen. The original envelope in which the "Dear Boss" letter was sent. All photos courtesy S.P. Evans / M.E.P.O. I removed the content of the stomach and placed it in a jar for further examination. There seemed very little in it in the way of food or fluid, but from the cut end partly digested farinaceous food escaped. Catherine Eddowes is born on April 14, 1842 in Graisley Green, Wolverhampton. At the time of her death she is 5 feet tall, has hazel eyes and dark auburn hair. She has a tattoo in blue ink on her left forearm "TC."

We heartily encourage you to use the Casebook as a source for your work. We ask only that you provide the proper citation(s) in the following form:Neil Bell discusses the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage and how Sir Howard Vincent's Police Code helped raise much-needed funds for the charity. The double event, the killings of Elizabeth Stride and Catharine Eddowes, could have been performed by Cross. However, serious arguments that Elizabeth Stride was not victim of the Ripper have been put forward and with some of these I tend to agree. Earlier in August, on Tuesday the 7th, Cross could have murdered Martha Tabram in the George Yard Building, just off Wentworth Street, as he was going to work. The timings for some of the deaths in 1888 fit the routine of a working man opportunistically killing women engaged in morning prostitution, and they fit the known timetable of Charles Cross. He may not have been the famous slayer, yet he brings life to the idea of the Ripper as a local, working-class killer.
