Plaster-of-Paris’ can mean the powdered material, the finished work - or the art-form; ‘casting plaster’ is just a more specific term for plaster-of-Paris while it is still just a powder, e.g. in the bag, etc. Unlike other types of gypsum, casting plaster is very pourable once mixed with water but sets quite suddenly, usually at somewhere between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on the particular variety. This material was supplied as the intermediate product of a commercial hydride-dehydride (HDH) process. 20 The as-received powder was ball milled in 250-g batches in an Ar atmosphere. The grinding medium was 6.35-mm stainless steel (440C) balls in a 10:1 ball:powder ratio by weight. The milling jar was made of 304 stainless steel (97.2 mm internal diameter by 142.9 mm internal length). Milling was done at 64.7 rpm (47.7% critical speed) for 30 min. After milling, the powder was sieved to < 37 μm (− 400 mesh) on a vibratory sieve shaker with an ultrasonic agitator (HK Technologies HK-8). The sieved powder was blended with as-received < 44 μm (− 325 mesh) master alloy (60 wt.% aluminum and 40 wt.% vanadium). These powders were mixed for 1 h in a 1-L bottle on a tumbling shaker-mixer (Glenn Mills T2C). The blended powder contained 9.6 wt.% master alloy (balance TiH 2), which produced Ti-6Al-4V after hydrogen was removed. Both the TiH 2 and master alloy powders were received from Reading Alloys (AMETEK) and had reported purities of > 99.8 wt.% (~ 0.13 wt.% O, ~ 0.02 wt.% C, and ~ 0.005 wt.% Fe). The mix can be become quite warm as setting progresses, depending on the normal set time for the particular plaster (see table above), the amount used and ambient temperature, etc. It is usually safe to remove the cast at about 2x set time, when the initial warmth has subsided. Imprints are made by pressing the subject into the wet plaster, so that the mould itself is the finished item; a release agent such as vaseline or a light oil may be needed depending on the material (see Casting above); this technique is popular with parents who want a permanent memento of small hands and feet, and a kilo of Fine Casting or Dental plaster and some plastic flower-pot dishes is all that is needed for two hand and foot imprints.
