About this deal

Ed, your many and varied experiments remind me of a biography of Thomas Edison I read long ago. He tried 99 different materials for light-bulb filaments before hitting on carbonised cotton thread. (I'm sure you knew that anyway). Greases are applied to mechanisms that can be lubricated only infrequently and where a lubricating oil would not stay in position. They also act as sealants to prevent the ingress of water and incompressible materials. Grease-lubricated bearings have greater frictional characteristics because of their high viscosities. Totten, George E.; Westbrook, Steven R.; Shah, Rajesh J., eds. (2003). Fuels and lubricants handbook: technology, properties, performance, and testing (volume 1). “ASTM manual” series, volume 37 (7thed.). ASTM International. p.560. ISBN 978-0-8031-2096-9. The main elements of standard ATSM D4950 and NLGI's consistency classification are reproduced and described in standard SAE J310 “automotive lubricating greases” published by SAE International. And if changing plugs, just before the old plug is 'unthreaded' and removed, blow hard down a length of narrow tubing to blow out any dislodged debris which might fall into the combustion chamber. Bet garages don't do this during a 'service'.

It’s made from renewable resources and contains no hazardous materials. It performs well in high-temperature applications and has good water resistance. It’s also very affordable. Lithium Grease: For a lithium complex grease to perform, it must be applied to the correct part or assembly for the application. Grease should only be applied where it is needed. Silicone-based brake grease is safe for rubber components such as brake caliper slide pins and bushings.

Ceramic Grease is a durable, high-quality ceramic grease. It has been specially developed for applications requiring high pressure and temperature resistance. Only started doing this today and I'd think there'll be situations (e.g. difficult to engage thread, wind) where it won't work, but it seemed potentially sometimes useful.

Only quality has a future

A common feature of greases is that they possess high initial viscosities, which upon the application of shear, drop to give the effect of an oil-lubricated bearing of approximately the same viscosity as the base oil used in the grease. This change in viscosity is called shear thinning. Grease is sometimes used to describe lubricating materials that are simply soft solids or high viscosity liquids, but these materials do not exhibit the shear-thinning properties characteristic of the classical grease. For example, petroleum jellies such as Vaseline are not generally classified as greases.
