"Etymology" is the study of the origin of a word, so it is tautological to say "etymological origin". A BBC TV documentary suggested that chav culture is an evolution of previous working-class youth subcultures associated with particular commercial clothing styles, such as mods, skinheads, and casuals. [20]Over time, the meaning of “Chav” has evolved to include other connotations, such as being uneducated, rowdy or aggressive. Have Chavs been ostracised for being the wrong type of white person? Much has been discussed around the problematic role of ethnicity in Chav culture. Indeed, many scholars have discussed how Chav adopted the language, dress and style of ethnic minority groups. This assimilation of non-white identities leaves the Chav stranded on two fronts: (1) they are marked as Other by predominantly white social groups and vilified as race/ethnicity traitors (Bennett, Chavspeak); (2) they stand apart from ethnic minority identities through a series of exaggerated and denigrated consumption choices – adopting a bricolage identity that defines them against other groups surrounding them. His collections are wholly Russian with a football hooligan vibe, which is something that was extremely prevalent when chav culture first came to the fore. The word in its current pejorative usage is recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary as first used in a Usenet forum in 1998 and first used in a newspaper in 2002. [9] [10] By 2005, the term had become widespread in its use as to refer to a type of anti-social, uncultured youth, who wear excessive flashy jewellery, white athletic shoes, baseball caps, and sham designer clothes. The girls commonly wear clothing which exposes their midriff. The word Chav became officially included in the English language in the UK in 2003, when it was inducted into the Oxford English Dictionary ( OED). The current OED entry offers many points for further discussion, all centred upon a discriminatory positioning of Chav: Finishing off even the dullest of outfits, the right piece of hardwear will always work hard for you. And, if you buy wisely, it can even appreciate in value in years to come. After all, who doesn't want their pension in their jewellery box? In Britain there are many words to describe people from this social group, and they are often limited to a particular town or region. Other words with a similar meaning to chav are townie, scally, ned and charver. The word chav has become common in southern England, and is generally thought to come from Chatham girls (Chatham is a town in Kent.) Some people think, however, that the word comes originally from the Romany word chavo (boy), which is also the origin of the Spanish word chaval.
