In May 2022, DNA evidence from the case was sent to Othram Inc., a private forensic laboratory in Texas. Othram scientists used "forensic-grade genome sequencing" to develop a comprehensive genealogical profile from the DNA of the unknown suspect.

The investigation led to the identification of Shaw. His identification was confirmed by three separate familial DNA comparison tests.

Michael Painter was a school bus driver walking through a swampy area of Oceola Township near Curdy Road, east of Eager Road. His body was found on March 7, 1975. David Charles Shaw was Angela Lansbury’s stepson. She welcomed David into her life after she got married to Peter Shaw in the year 1949. He was born in California. The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Team conducted a press conference Wednesday morning to announce the breakthrough that led them to Charles David Shaw.She decided to hitchhike, it was something she had done before. On April 14, 1982, Kimberly Louiselle’s body was found behind a park and ride in the Island Lake Recreation Area near Grand River Avenue and Kensington Road -- just five miles from her home. The body of 16-year-old Kimberly Louiselle was found on April 14, 1982, on a wooded trail 20 miles from where she was last seen. Her sister, Cindy Arthurs, wrote on social media that Louiselle was hitchhiking home, and "she made at least 4 phone calls to people who lived in South Lyon trying to find a ride the rest of the way home."
