Single Barrel Select, Small Batch, 12 Year Old Small Batch, 12 Year Barrel Proof, 18 Year Old Single Barrel, 20 Year Old Single Barrel, 21 Year Old Single Barrel, Elijah Craig 22 Year Old Single Barrel, 23 Year Old Single Barrel, 125 proof Elijah Craig (Distillery Only release) Nothing in the Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from gross negligence or willful misconduct by us. European oak, with its ability to integrate flavors subtly and softly, effortlessly balances the sweetness and spiciness of the Lazio-inspired toast profile with the elevated character of our fully-matured Bourbon. This edition leads with a nose of caramel and crème brûlée and once tasted, bright fruit notes burst onto the palate after initial notes of baking spices. The finish is moderately long and is dominated by spice. Proof: The amount of alcohol in the whiskey, displayed as double that of the alcohol percentage. E.g., bourbon containing 50 percent alcohol is labeled as 100 proof. Bourbon, the Great American Spirit, is not as simple as one might think. Despite the increasing demand (and price) for much-hyped bottles, bourbon is an every-person drink. At the end of the day, it's a blue-collar spirit, made by thirsty farmers, for thirsty farmers. But underneath its fundamentals swims a deep sea of factors — additional rules and regulations, hype machines and deceptive marketing, false myths and a boom that began in 2008 and is still going strong today — that make bourbon more complex than it seems.

A converted Baptist ( who kind of looked like Cary Elwes?), Craig was jailed several times for preaching without a license ( it’s a thing). In spite of his religiosity (or because of it, depending on how you view bourbon), Craig founded a distillery in 1789 and became a leading name in oak-aged corn whiskey. Craig was ‘A’ Father of Bourbon, not ‘The’ Father of Bourbon. In 2011, Elijah Craig 20 Year Old Single Barrel (Barrel #3735) was named by Whisky Advocate magazine as "American Whiskey of the Year". [15] According to Heaven Hill the Elijah Craig Small Batch bourbon is made from batches of 200 barrels, or less, and is named after the supposed creator of bourbon as we know it. The tale, in a nutshell, is that Reverend Elijah Craig was a moonshiner and one day there was a fire. Some of his barrels got charred in that fire, but were still able to hold his moonshine. After realizing what charring a barrel did for the whiskey he began doing it on purpose and thus invented bourbon. I have had this bourbon many times, but really have never sat down and thought about it until now. This is the first time I have really noticed how it does show signs of its age with the noticeable oak and char from start to finish. That certainly explains how the Elijah Craig 18 turns out to have so much oak after years of additional aging. I didn’t remember quite so much sugar syrupy in the taste, but yet here it is.Bourbon is made by aging 51 percent corn-based whiskey in charred American oak barrels, but that wasn’t always the case. Charred barrels weren’t a must (definitely not a legal must) in the early days of American bourbon whiskey (the turn of the 18th century). Like its confusing terminology cousin “single barrel,” the term “small batch” first came to usage courtesy of famed Jim Beam distiller Booker Noe. And while the honor system is a big deal among distillers, small batch is not a legally regulated term in bourbon production. The PGA of America is ecstatic to have Elijah Craig as part of the 2023 Ryder Cup experience in Rome,” says Jeff Price, Chief Commercial Officer, PGA of America. “This extraordinary limited edition release of the Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel is the perfect way to celebrate the world’s premier golf competition.” You are responsible for all activities through your account. But Elijah Craig is better described as among the fathers of bourbon whiskey, since there were other distillers in Craig’s time doing much the same thing. He did, however, have a pivotal impact on bourbon whiskey production. Craig is credited as the first to use charred oak barrels. WhiskyWorld (27 March 2023). The nose is fairly sweet, with sweet cherry candy, brown sugar and simple sugar syrup, but also noticeable oak and light smoke. The bouquet is full, somewhat more so than might be expected for the proof. The flavors continue into the taste, with sweetness at the forefront. It’s a simple syrup sweetness, with both the sweetness and syrup components present. The oak and char remain noticeable throughout and last well into the finish. As the sweetness subsides a bit, white pepper spice grows. Elijah Craig Small Batch is a fairly full bodied bourbon for the proof. I’ve Had Elijah Craig Small Batch Many Times Before Smelling the Elijah Craig Small Batch next to both the age-stated and a 12 yo single barrel there is a noticable drop in richness and complexity. The palate follow suite with the noticeable difference in richness and the peanut quality is more pronounced in the SMB than the 12s. It’s still a good bourbon, but there is a noticeable difference between it and the 12, but there’s no use crying about it because them’s the breaks and this is the time we live in.

In 2017, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof B517 (release 14, 124.2 proof, 62.1% ABV) was named by Whisky Advocate as "Whisky of the Year". [16] Reviewer Jeffery Lindenmuth described the whiskey as "delivering a massive mouthful of incredibly robust flavors that drape leathery oak over a gooey caramel core, sprinkled with baking spice, while candied nuts and tobacco leaf notes appear on a drying finish dusted with cocoa."
