About this deal

The Bentley comes “purring” down the drive after them, which is a nice phrase, and Mr. Perton and Rooky get out. Damn: Rooky’s realized there was something familiar about one of the other boys, and now he recognizes Richard. There’s a fantastic scene where Julian defends Richard and Timmy bites a bad guy:

Now, clearly the Five are too young to survive in George's house without a cook, so the obvious solution is to send them on a cycling tour with Timmy running free alongside, where not only will they have to dodge cars etc, and find fields to camp in, and swim in random unknown lakes, and deal with tramps ... but still have to cook for themselves! Lima Sekawan benar-benar membangkitkan keinginan masa kecil deh. Normally the guest boy is socially inferior to the Five, but this time Richard has a wealthy father. Richard is rich, you might say. I wonder if that is why Blyton called him so. I did sporfle a bit at Julian being “white and furious” though. I know Blyton just means he was pale, but it makes him sound on the brink of grabbing a tiki torch and attending a dodgy protest. [ Dove: She does use that phrase a lot. People go pink, then red, then white, depending on their level of irritation to fury on the Blyton scale.] Perton and Hunchy are such great adversaries. You have smooth talking Purton who is far scarier for his calm, but you can feel ruthlessness underneath it-to his friends as well as his enemies. And Hunchy who is angry, threatens violence and you also feel will do whatever he thinks is needed. A big bag of nonsense but good enough fun for children. I'm listening to the whole series with my disabled daughter and it seems to be entertaining her pretty well. urn:lcp:fivegetintotroub0008blyt:epub:5deac76e-b1f8-4fe3-8b27-f11845484303 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier fivegetintotroub0008blyt Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t45r42h9f Invoice 1652 Isbn 0340681136

Someone else persuades Rooky that their best bet is to let the kids go, rather than try to lie to the police about why they’re there. So Perton starts to take them down to the gate (and says if Timmy had stayed there a day longer he’d have shot him, which is the thing I was worried about all along; it’s what the “bad guys” I’ve known would have done, without even warning you).In here, Inspector,’ drawled Mr. Perton. ‘We were having a little conference, and heard the hammering at the door. Apparently you got in somehow. I’m afraid you’ll get into trouble for this.’ Overall it is pleasantly sinister book with a darker tone than usual. Surely after this adventure none of the parents will allow the Five to go off unsupervised on any more holidays? By now (book 8 in the series) the beginnings of the books are settling into a formula. These books are formulaic by design, but we are all right with it. We want more of a good thing, and we know we are in the hands of a master storyteller. So, standard Famous Five book beginning: Uncle Quentin, forgetting the children were coming, made another commitment and has to leave with Aunt Fanny. Joanna the cook is ill (of course). What a problem! Fortunately the children suggest a solution: they want to go on a cycling holiday. I'm very happy with the idea the children come up with this time. That's bound to be fun! I love it when they go on their own!

Quentin and Fanny are less skilled at getting rid of the children, but this time they have found a solid excuse to avoid their duty of care to the minors under their supervision. Quentin has a conference, and of course Fanny must prioritise her husband over the care of several underage children in her care. And yes, we are treated to another glorious pre-adventure story, full of joyful freedom. The children cycle from one small countryside village to another, enjoying the natural scenery and the freedom, having great meals and drinking ginger-beer.This book has all the elements required for a thrilling Enid Blyton story including the Uppity and Undisciplined Outsider who needs gentle guidance onto the right path ... possibly by Julian:- Richard: "Who is there to stop us?" Gaya terjemahan edisi yang saya punya bikin saya merasakan nuansa 1970-an (walau sebenarnya seri ini terbit tahun 1940-an). It's my mother's favorite childhood book series too, and somehow it's soothing to share the same childhood nuance with her. Taking into account when the first books about The Famous Five were published, I can understand that World War II and the aftermath were of influence. And thus, that food played a big role in people's lives. It was also adapted in English, as a 1978 double episode of the 70s TV show and a 1995 episode of the 90s TV show.

Give me another chance,’ almost wept poor Richard, who had never in his life been spoken to like this before. He tried to hate Julian for saying such things to him—but oddly enough he couldn’t. He only respected and admired him all the more.I mean, he’s not wrong; she’s actually done this stuff in other books. But everything about that speech makes me want to punch him in the nose. [ Dove: We’re about sixty years too late, but we need to start an Anne Kirrin fan club.] Did you know that Enid Blyton (° 1897 - † 1968) wrote hundreds of books and at some periods even 50 books per year? It’s weird how utterly satisfying I find that scene. Also, Julian is really truly Richard’s hero at this point (and I suppose so is Timmy), and I can’t even criticize it. The only way this scene could be any more brilliant is if the dog and the boy were one werewolf-y creature, that did both the stern talking to AND the biting. [ Wing: YES PLEASE.] In between all the eating and sleeping, our protagonists also solve some 'mysteries' that are either unbelievable or totally clear from the beginning. And finally Julian is able to do a Poirot-style walk through, incriminating the baddies and exposing the hidden man with the diamonds.
