About this deal

We left sections of 1mm unpainted mild steel to gently corrode outside over the course of several months, then let them thoroughly dry before treating both sides with our products, carefully following the instructions.

When painted on it seemed to sit on the surface of our rust rather than soaking in and reacting. It also took longer to dry, meaning we had to wait until the next day until we could paint over it with our primer and top coat.

Apply sparingly, two coats at 30 minutes interval. The first coat should be worked into pitted areas and then smoothed by brush strokes in one direction. Excess application should be avoided. The second coat should be applied at a 90 degree angle to the first. For best results leave for 24 hours after which finishing coats may be applied. Traditional paints and coatings applied to corrosion give disappointingly short-lived performance because they simply hide the underlying and continuing corrosion - the failure is first seen by blistering of the coating and the rapid breakthrough of rust. hydrate 80 provides powerful protection to rusted steel surfaces, its electrochemical function stabilises existing corrosion by converting the iron oxides into a protective metal complex, it also combines with surface moisture and oxygen depriving the corrosion process of the conditions it requires. Paints and coatings applied to a hydrate 80 treated surface demonstrate amazing improvements in long-term performance.

I have just been into the garage to inspect some work I carried out on my XJS bodywork ten years ago. Again, the hydrate 80 converts and forms a barrier, so things on top of that won't have any protecting properties. It does say on the hydrate 80 instruction sheet I have that it is purposefully made runny in consistency so as to wet the rust better. I agree that any rust converter will have rust that it cannot reach, still beneath the coating. https://cdn.opieoils.co.uk/images/variants/large/bilthamber/bilt-hamber-hydrate-80-500ml-bottle-2.jpg Before treating any corrosion upon your car, it’s advised that you use a wire brush beforehand. This allows you to remove any loose or flaking rust and treat it more effectively using one of our recommendations. If you are new to treating rust on your car, we wrote an in-depth guide on how to remove and treat rust whilst testing out some rust treatment products.

Quick Guide

https://cdn.opieoils.co.uk/images/variants/medium/bilthamber/bilt-hamber-hydrate-80-500ml-bottle-5.jpg Problem with those so called "rust-converters" are you need to make sure you get every last bit of that rust is covered and has been "wetted" with the converter (and thats not very likely to happen) More so its the "false" insurence it gives you leaving you with a coating that should stop rust but in reality it just masks it. Everytime i remove rust from cars i use 2 simple things. 1; a sanding pen (if larger i use a wire drill to take the worst of) then only first when i start to see some clean/bare metal i take out number 2; Phosphor acid. Its dirt cheap and its the main ingredient thats in 99% of those rust eaters and what not. Just take some toilet paper, soak it in the acid and put small balls or what you want to call it on the object to get treated and let it soak for 30 minuttes or so. Wash it off with brakecleaner or demi water and inspect. If it needs one more go just do that. For the same price i can buy a small can of hydrate 80 i can buy roughly 9 liters of phosphor acid in my lokal shopping center (most likely overpriced, but that goes to show how dirt cheap it is) hydrate 80 is an excellent base for a wide range of paint finishes. It is preferable but not essential to use a good quality primer before applying topcoats. There is no easy way, hard work with wire brushes polycarbide wheels etc. then a couple of treatments with Jenolite and a coat of the zinc primer mentioned earlier will slow the inevitable down considerably. If you intend to sound proof your car, this rust treatment is also well known for its excellent sound deadening qualities.

Overall, the Hammerite Waxoyl is the best rust treatment for cars that not only removes rust but also prevents it reappearing. Before use, we recommend that you use a wire brush to remove any loose rust and also warm up the formula. It can then be freely sprayed in all the areas that need treating and help to prolong the life of your car. Our only other issue with the Kurust is the price, as the cost per millilitre is high compared to others here.
