About this deal

My rating is pretty low, so let’s move to the things that didn’t worked out for me in this book. Only at the beginning. These are my thoughts and opinions, so of course not everyone will agree. One of the characters, Quinton, is exploring his bi-sexuality a bit in this book. It starts off a bit strange in the beginning, but begins to make sense the further this book goes on. I smirk and lean into him, allowing our proximity to work in my favor. “Whip it out. I’ll drop to my knees right here and now. Best head you’ll ever get, guaranteed.” The third thing. I hated how many times Phoenix mentioned and judged Holdens' s*x life. He liked hooking up with people so what? It's his life and his decisions. Why judge? The next thing, Kason and Phoenix's friendship. He and Kason were best friends/ family/ brothers since they were kids. They were supposed to be their favorite human beings, but they lied to each other. Not once. Imagine you have a best friend who invites his hook up to your trip, or sees that you're in a relationship with a shitty person and doesn't tell you to end it even though he sees that it could end in heartbreak. Plus, I'm not even talking about Phoenix judging Kason for not going to a university that was better for him because of the baseball program. Kason was "begging him" to come to Leighton instead of going off to Foltyn for college. The problem is that it was still Phoenix’s choice and final decision. He could say no. At least in the end, he chose his happiness and put himself first. Finally.

In truth, I loved the first half of the book, but then again, I always love the 50% of every enemies-to-lovers books,I love their animosity and their banter. Unfortunately what I also hate about them is exactly what happened here too : they got from “I hate you” to waaaay too sappy in a blink of an eye. And I wouldn’t have been THAT bothered by it here because one, they didn’t really hate each other and two, if I had liked Phoenix a bit more. Sadly, I didn’t. I felt a slight imbalance there, I felt that Holden was the one to fall first, the one who fell harder and the only one who fought. Phoenix was just there , going with the flow while always judging, slut-shaming and mistreating Holden in favor of his oblivious and annoying bestie (and ironically being quite a shitty friend to his bestie too) . This book is wonderful. I truly couldn't stop reading it! I was wondering if I should read this or Don't You Dare first and it was Ki Stephens who told me this one was better. So, I obviously got it. Thanks to Ki for telling me because I would have not experienced this book otherwise. And oh boy, would I have been missing out HARD. Until about 50-60% the story was really good, I liked it. The dialogues were a little strange here and there, but I wasn't bothered, because the anticipation was strong and the tension was there, Phoenix and Holden started hooking up and were keeping it on the down low, I was excited about where it would lead, was up for a lot of secret hot sex and really wanted for that to continue. So what I’ve been looking forward to was an easy, hot (despite the ice 😬) enemies/rivals to lovers book I could listen to while driving, or while sweating on my sunbed, listening with my eyes closed. You have to stop looking at me like that.” My eyes follow the lines and planes of his face as I murmur, “I wish I knew how.”

I am excited to read book 2. I know my boy Holden is gonna be involved in some love shenanigans, so looking forward to it! About the story. Phoenix or "Nix" had a one night stand with Holden which end up poorly for them as Holden was too drunk to remember anything about it, leading to them not talking about the incident for half a year. Six months later, Phoenix's best friend is on the verge of making the same mistake with the school playboy, so he decides to stop him. The problem is that he falls in love with Holden along the way. Without telling a thing to Kason. His mentioned best friend.

Customer reviews

I will say, I really liked the reveal at the climax, I liked the way Oakley was not let off the hook for what he'd done, because that had been bothering me since the beginning. I liked how hard he had to work for it, how much he longed and yearned for Quinn because I think Quinn really deserved it, and I liked those last few chapters. I mean… Show me one guy. ONE. Who thinks like that. Like “hey, let me pop my dimples because I think I look cute when I’m popping them” 🙄 Which is why the words, “I’ll believe it when I see it,” slip out of my mouth before I can stop them. Phoenix and Kason had a terrible friendship, that's not being besties, that's just toxic, they should break it up, yesterday.
