In January 2009, a spokesman for the BBC confirmed that they had asked Hasbro to change the CGI skin colour of the Upsy Daisy CGI doll following "a handful of complaints". The doll was originally released with a noticeably lighter complexion than seen in the television series, as it was based on the animated version of Upsy Daisy. [14]

But all those theories are, again, the work of grown ups. And subliminal readings of 14th century poetry aside, it still doesn’t explain what on earth In the Night Garden is all about and why children love it so God damn much. Angela’s children watching In The Night Garden Sound crazy? You’d be right, but children the world over can’t get enough of the characters and the technicolour world they inhabit. In the spring of 2008, several new toys arrived, including roll-along characters, Talking Cuddly Makka Pakka, Ninky Nonk Pop-up tent and more. Hasbro won the 2008 "Best Licensed Toy or Game range" Licensing Award for their In The Night Garden... range. [13]

Book a Short Break

They babble in baby talk and the whole think is narrated by esteemed English Shakespearean thespian Sir Derek Jacobi. The creators describe In the Night Garden as ”the magical place that exists between waking and sleeping in a child’s imagination”. The boxset Hello Everybody! (24 November 2008) includes "Hello Igglepiggle", "Hello Upsy Daisy", "Hello Makka Pakka", & "Hello Tombliboos" But not on CBeebies. Oh no. In this strange, drug-inspired reality the twisted individual in a cat suit is just giving the little girl a welcome chance to float around on bubbles made by an elephant seal who, inexplicably considering our weather, lives in the lake. My husband has conflicted feelings about the show, in that he is conflicted about which character and episode he hates the most.

The specials centre on a brand new character called the Zonk, who sends the characters off to the magical world of the ZonkeyZoney so they can relax in peace. The series is fully animated in 3D CGI animation, unlike the original series which was a mix of CGI, 2D animation and live-action. I think it’s pretty trippy, I’ve always thought that whoever writes or directs it is on some good drugs” says one friend. ”It’s the kind of TV that could really drive a sleep-deprived mum around the bend.” a b Reynolds, Nigel (2 April 2008). "Anger as BBC moves In The Night Garden". The Daily Telegraph. Archived from the original on 5 June 2008 . Retrieved 11 January 2010. I only watch it in hope of catching the longed-for episode where his cat, owl and dog friends reveal the harsh realities of farming life to Timmy, in much the same way as older children can always be relied upon to tell younger ones there is no Father Christmas.

Now the ending is what really got me. For each episode, his friends play around for 25 mins or so. But, it's at the end that the narrator begins to tell everybody to 'go to sleep'. Unfortunately, Iggle Piggle is always seen to be awake at the end. Despite his best efforts to fall asleep, the narrator says "Its time to go". To me, this means its time for Iggle Piggle to leave the night garden and continue his days upon the boat, suffering on the never-ending sea. In the end, we see Iggle Piggle, still currently in the night garden, drifting the seas, as the sun begins to rise. Soon enough, Iggle Piggle will awake, awaiting the day when his life finally leaves him and he's able to be with his friends forever. In The Night Garden". Golden Bear Toys. In the Night Garden... is intended to help children relax and achieve calming relationships with their parents. Producer Anne Wood also states: "We became very aware of the anxiety surrounding the care of young children which manifested itself in all kinds of directions, but the one big subject that came up, again and again, was bedtime. It's the classical time for tension between children who want to stay up and parents who want them to go to bed. So this is a programme about calming things down whereas most children's TV is about getting everything up." [6] So I've been watching old episodes of In the Night Garden, one of my favourite shows as a kid and one which I haven't seen in over 10 years. And putting the pieces together from an older, more understanding point of view, a deeper story begins to emerge. Before setting off to meet Davenport, I'd asked my daughter if she had a question for Iggle Piggle's daddy. "Why does Iggle Piggle have to go to bed?" she said. "That's a really interesting question," says Davenport. "He's the connection for the child, the one who goes to sleep at the beginning and enters the Night Garden. But he's also, crucially, the only character not in bed at the end. 'Somebody's not in bed – Iggle Piggle's not in bed.' There are lots of conspiracy theories out there about In the Night Garden and its hidden meaning. The solution takes the form of a travelling inflatable theatre fitted with baby-friendly touches, such as microwaves for the warming of milk (promising a whole new kind of interval drinks bedlam). Audiences are offered a choice of two stories. "One features Iggle Piggle losing his blanket," says Davenport. "The other features Makka Pakka washing everyone's faces." Neither story, it's safe to say, will come as a great surprise to regular viewers of the show, many of whom are parents who find its soothing antics easier on the eye and the ear, not to mention the imagination, than Teletubbies. BBC acts over light-skinned doll". BBC News. 5 January 2009. Archived from the original on 26 January 2009 . Retrieved 11 January 2010.

These may be silly words,” he told The Guardian, “but they are nice words: charming, attractive, fun words”. The Adventures of Abney and Teal could be renamed The Corduroy Catnapper and it would make more sense. But this is CBeebies, where television programmes aimed at the under-6s seem intent on teaching them to run away with odd men, fear adolescence and do terrible things to music. Bedtime really commands a child's entire day. Very often children don't have a proper sense of time. They live with the idea that, at any moment, someone could just take them from what they are doing and send them to bed. It can be a difficult moment: being suddenly alone. So In the Night Garden makes a metaphorical explanation for sleep, which is one of the only things in a child's life it can't be accompanied on. That's why you have the image of Iggle Piggle alone on a boat at the start, floating on a dark swelling ocean that's a metaphor for sleep."

I don’t know how the show does it. Maybe I don’t want to know. There can be three screaming children and as soon as they hear the honking of the Ninky Nonk they turn into calm and peaceful angels, giggling hysterically and clapping their hands and twirling around and generally being gorgeous and happy and calm, lovely little cherubs. a b c "Past Winners and Nominees – Children's – Awards – 2007". Iggle Piggle and his friends, Makka Pakka, Upsy Daisy, The triplets and the small people, as well as their parents, we're all on a boat out at sea having a good time. But, due to a reason, the ship begins to sink or is sunk. Iggle Piggle escapes onto a lifeboat, with nothing more than a safety blanket that he keeps (as he is probably a child). Unfortunately, his friends and parents die on the ship. Watching children's TV - or just listening with one ear while I'm doing something else, in the same way a parent is always listening for a scream or a thump or a suspicious silence - makes me actively yearn for Bing to be skinned, or at the very least given a good slap. I worry Teal's parents left her there, want Peekaboo to shout his own name at the Twirlywoos JUST ONCE, and can't hear the Peppa Pig theme without thinking of sausages.
