About this deal

The story is about a family that disappears and there is evidence of foul play at their house. Have they been kidnapped or murdered. The book begins with a highly emotional scene where Michael Rowland, a deaf child, is rescuing his 5-year-old brother, Joshua from being abused by his step-father – running away as fast as he could, wile also witnessing a murder – which puts Michael’s life on the line. Michael’s coach, Diesel Kennedy, brings the injured Michael to Dr. Dani Novak, who will treat Michael. She is also deaf in one ear, and is able communicate with Michael using sign language. Michael’s life is in danger One morning, Julianne Hillier arrives at her best friend's house to go for their regular run together, but finds no one home. The family's phones are there, charging, the kettle is still warm, and their passports haven't been taken. Upstairs in the daughter's bedroom, a message is scrawled in blood: "make them stop".

I read When I Was Ten by Fiona Cummins last year and rated it one of my top books of the year, so was excited to give this one a go... and knew to expect it to be dark. And dark it is, but I also was a little disappointed. In the Into the Dark book, there is an overview of all the parts with a letter and number combination for reference, and I recommend writing these at the bottom of the modules so that you can set up the missions more easily. Gallowdark terrain comparison & measurements Let’s take a look at the terrain first, as, in my opinion, the Space Hulk set is really the star of the show here. The Gallowdark is represented as a modular wall system, that depicts the decaying remains of an imperial spaceship. There are doors, ventilation pipes, arcane technical equipment, control screens, and of course skulls without end. There’s an insane amount of plastic in the box so you can fill the board tightly with terrain, and the moving doors and accessories bring it to life. The next three big Kill Team boxes will expand the system even more, and I’m very excited to see what else is coming. In the Gallowdark lore, it is hinted that some of the parts of the Space Hulk are made up of Chaos, Tyranid and Aeldari ships, so there are many expansion possibilities here. Gallowdark terrain unboxing: 4 x 2 large sprues of plastic It all begins with a teenage boy struggling to save his brother from their brutal, sadistic stepfather. Michael sees a murder take place but who would believe him ? He's deaf, he's a bit of a loner and his mother who should protect him just doesn't care about anyone but herself. So when Michael meets his brothers football coach Diesel he has no idea that he's finally found the one person who not only believes him but understands everything Michael has gone through. Gripping, moving, emotive and passionate, 'Into The Dark' is a great read to treat yourself to as an early Christmas present,to put on your Christmas list (if you've been good!) or to give to a thriller loving friend. If you can bear to part with it!

Success!

The Crime: The gilded Holden family - Piper and Gray and their two teenage children, Riva and Artie - have vanished from the house without trace. In Romania, U.S. Marine Stephen Buchevsky, whose family died in the initial strikes, joins a band of fighters led by one Mircea Basarab, who are more than meets the eye. In space, Fleet Commander Thikair ruefully concludes that human nature compels survivors of Shongairi atrocities to avenge their loved ones at all costs. Unlike other known species, humans have no natural "submission" instinct to superior powers; altruism and sacrifice of self to safeguard the innocent are, to the aliens, marks of "insanity." When Julianne Hillier arrives at her best friend, Piper Holden’s, sprawling beach front home, for their regular morning run, she’s surprised because Piper normally opens the door as soon as she arrives. Internationally bestselling, RITA-award winning, author Karen Rose was born and raised in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC. She met her husband, Martin, on a blind date when they were seventeen and after they both graduated from the University of Maryland, (Karen with a degree in Chemical Engineering) they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Karen worked as an engineer for a large consumer goods company, earning two patents, but as Karen says, “scenes were roiling in my head and I couldn't concentrate on my job so I started writing them down. I started out writing for fun, and soon found I was hooked.” Whereas When I Was Ten feels carefully planned out from the beginning, Into The Dark feels less tightly plotted, with occasional threads left loose and hanging. The b-plot of the new detective Saul Anguish and the forensic linguist "Blue" he connects with feels largely unrelated to the central mystery, and I was disappointed that there was no real connection by the end other than him working on the case.

Thikair plots to develop a bioweapon that will "accidentally" be released in the U.S. to fulfill the original contingency plan. This requires the kidnapping of humans as test subjects, to ensure the bioweapon will serve its purpose of killing every remaining human on Earth. When guerillas in the U.S. and Romania become aware of the Shongairi plot, they manage to save some victims, but the Shongairi use their air supremacy to continue their genocidal mission. Diesel has loved Dani from the moment he set eyes on her 18 months ago, in her free clinic helping disadvantaged and under privileged people who need her help. But she has always pushed him away and told him that they can't be together.

The Detective: DS Saul Anguish, brilliant but with a dark past, treads the narrow line between light and shade. Desperate and afraid, the boys have nowhere else to go but to Joshua’s soccer coach, journalist and ex-Army ranger Diesel Kennedy. When Diesel sees that Michael is injured, he takes them to see Dr. Dani Novak—not only because she’s fluent in American Sign Language, but because he’s drawn to her and everything she stands for. She never refuses Diesel’s requests—because she, too, feels their connection—but she resists him for reasons she doesn’t want to confess. Karen Rose is one of my favorite Romantic Suspense authors and I know with every book of hers that I start that I will love it. Into the Dark was no different and right from the beginning this story had me captivated. Dani and Diesel had a relationship and connection that actually surprised me with how personal they got. It was a bit of a change from the usual heavy focus on the suspense that Ms. Rose does but I liked that we got to see so much of these characters all while still getting that mystery aspect. I didn't like the families, and it became apparent pretty early what had happened with the main mystery. The answer to it soured my whole experience of this story. I wasn't keen on the way it all developed because it felt shallow and convenient rather than revealing any kind of deeper themes. Also, it was very action-oriented, with things travelling along without much thought. Normally I love a fast-paced novel, but this just had too much going on to keep it this fast without losing some emotional connection.
