Young's main brands are Young's Bitter (commonly known as Ordinary) renamed Young's London Original in 2019, a 3.7% abv bitter made with Red Tractor accredited Maris Otter and crystal malt and Fuggle and Golding hops; and Young's Special renamed Young's London Special in 2019, a 4.5% abv version of the Ordinary. They feel that street drinking schools will no longer congregate when these drinks aren't available. Super strength fears This complaint focuses on the particular contradictions arising from the marketing of these products. These drinks are produced in 500ml cans that cannot be resealed and contain four and a half units of alcohol. Typically they are consumed by single individuals…the consumption of a single can takes the individual above the government’s own daily alcohol unit guideline limits of 2-3 units for a woman and 3-4 units for a man. Wholesalers have reported falling sales of superstrength lagers in recent years as a proliferation of non-duty-paid brands floods the market, including foreign imports and UK-produced lager intended for export which is diverted onto the domestic market, according to the FWD.

Kirin Ichiban, a 5% abv pale lager, brewed under licence for the Japanese brewing company Kirin. It is brewed using the unique Ichiban Shibori brewing process, the most expensive in the world. The former Wells Brewery was renamed the Eagle Brewery by Marston's and in 2019 Young's rebranded its Bitter and Special as London Original and London Special respectively. Wells & Young's Brewery was formed in 2006 from a merger of the brewing operations of Charles Wells Ltd and Young's Brewery. Charles Wells initially had a 60% stake and Young's 40%. In 2011, Charles Wells took full control when it bought Young's 40% stake. [1] Wells & Young's is now responsible for brewing, distributing and marketing Charles Wells' and Young & Co's brands at the Eagle Brewery in Bedford. [2] [3] [4]

Storescould lose their alcohol licence if they continue to sell 500ml cans of some high strength lagers after the end of March. Retailer Alert Bulletins (RABs) issued by the Portman Group last month advised retailers not to sell Carlsberg Special Brew 500ml, Skol Super 500ml and Kestrel Super Premium 500ml 9% abv cansafter March 31. Let me first say that, while I fully appreciate quality beer (Baltic porters, English bitters, and lambics are some of my favorite styles), I also appreciate beers that will get me drunk cheaply. I don't like nonsense beers like Bud Lite and whatnot, but I have no problem drinking, for instance, St. Ides. This is that sort of beer.

The Panel wanted to understand whether there were strongly held cultural assumptions which influenced the way consumers would respond to drinks in cans. In a survey by YouGov [1] of over 2000 adults, 80% of those surveyed believed that a 500ml 9% abv can was designed for the contents to be consumed by one person in one sitting. The data was similar for a 440ml 4% ABV can. The data also showed only 2% of people thought these cans were easy to reseal once opened. The Panel shared this view. Consumers would not share the contents of a can, or reseal it saving it for another drinking occasion, the contents would instead be consumed by one person in one drinking occasion. Bottle conditioned brands are Young's Bitter at 4.5% abv, Young's London Gold, and Young's Special London Ale, a 6.4% abv strong pale ale which was awarded a gold medal for bottle conditioned beer at the 1999 CAMRA Great British Beer Festival, and received a Grand Gold Medal at Monde Selection's World Quality Selections in 2010.
