All units are getting significantly more wounds than they had in the last edition – partly to keep them alive longer for more “cinematic moments”, and partly because weapon damage has had a buff, too. Most “baseline human and xenos” operators have an APL of two, meaning they can take two actions each time they activate – but Space Marines have three, and Adeptus Custodes have four. The Crusade Relics of Kill Team, Rare Equipment gets added to your team’s stash, from which you can retrieve it before battles to add to your team during the pre-game equipment step. My favorites among these are Vid-Capture Relay, which lets a Guardsman Comms Operative perform its Signal action to boost another operative’s APL from anywhere on the table, and Fungal Brew, which removes a Kommando’s Battle Scars and prevents them from being injured or killed during and after the battle. Assets Still, after a couple of games, minor assembly niggles fade into insignificance – and the book-passingfaff ceases to be a real concern, as you’ll have memorised most of the key bits and bobs for both Kill Teams by then. Octarius is, for the most part, a well put together, well presented starter set – and, once you settle into this game’s rhythm, you won’t mind so much about the stumbles along the way, because (spoiler) Kill Team 2.0 is a really good game.

The Ork Kommandos and Death Korps of Krieg models included in the Kill Team: Octarius set are incredible, but you might be wondering how your existing Warhammer 40,000 collection works with the all-new Kill Team rules. Generals expecting hordes of brutish killers instead find themselves pinned down by sniper fire, ambushed by wall-breaching drills, and chopped to pieces by monstrous greenskins that leave survivors baffled as to how they managed to creep up on them. Underneath the divider lies the rest of the box: the books, the build guide, the sheet of tokens, your transfers, the cards, dice, bases, and game board. Sure, they’re not quite as interesting or fun as the faction dice you can buy, but it was a nice surprise to find some vaguely themed dice in the box. Build the Table for the Mission

In its earliest announcement, GW said the new editionhad been“redesigned from the ground up with all-new rules”, and “represents a total reimagining of how combat on this scale should operate in the Warhammer 40,000 universe”. And, well, from all we’ve seen so far, that doesn’t sound too far off. My advice would be to be patient and make sure you dry-fit everything first. You’ll get these eventually. The saving grace is that he terrain is very simple to put together, with only three or so components a piece, so it’s easy enough to make sure the parts that slot together are in the correct place. Swathes upon swathes of the units listed in the compendium have absolutely nothing listed under Abilities or Unique Actions.
