About this deal

Ahoy there me mateys! It be no secret that I adore Garth Nix. He was the first author featured in me Broadside No. 1 and I have re-read the Old Kingdom series many times over the years. So I was super happy to finally read his newest standalone book.

Strange Fishing in the Western Highlands" (from Hellboy: Oddest Jobs, edited by Christopher Golden_ Characters who know how they want to live their lives and work to build those lives with integrity and imagination. A different practical yet magical Susan (Terry Pratchett’s creation) whom “our” Susan sometimes brought to mind. The Nine Gates of Death: An Extract of the Journal of Idrach the Lesser Necromancer" (2009). A short story released on oldkingdom.com.au [6] DNF at 30%. It feels like such a slog that I'm not interested in pushing through. Based on the premise I should have loved this book, but it's a lot like The Starless Sea- really wonderful idea but terrible execution. It's weird and not in an enjoyable or humorous way.

Why did you decide to differentiate the Booksellers by their hands?

Y como ya he hablado antes del final (que no me lo esperaba y que da para más, aunque es autoconclusivo), me despido con la siguiente pregunta: Throughout the book I found there was no real depth to any of the characters which meant I didn’t invest in them. What you learn of them in the first few chapters feels like all you end up knowing them at the end of the book. I had no real sense of who they were and what really motivated them. It all felt a little disconnected. Like someone telling you a story whilst you’re facing a different direction. You hear the person speaking but can’t see the body language or gesticulations for the story to be more than just the words. All eight stories plus a new ninth story The Field of Fallen Foe are collected in Sir Hereward and Mister Fitz: Stories of the Witch Knight and the Puppet Sorcerer (2023). You’ll pay for this, you little f—” the older man swore, swiping with the cut-throat razor that he’d just pulled out from under one of the embroidered cushions on the couch.

No, no. You too, darling girl. Even more so for you. Be sure to stay in the light. That’s what he would have wanted.” The setting is a slightly alternate London in the 1980's. Margaret Thatcher is Prime Minister but she is Britain's second woman PM. The first was Clementina Attlee. Nix has a lot of fun with gender throughout the book which will bring a smile to anyone old enough to have watched the TV shows of the day (for example Denise Waterman in The Sweeney).Oh. Well. It’s natural, I suppose. But you must be careful. He told me… no, that was about something else.…” Me han gustado mucho los personajes y el mensaje en sí que es Merlín para todo lector: gracias por normalizar que la ropa no tiene género. Aunque Susan era una buena protagonista, mi favorito fue la hermana de Merlín, empaticé mucho con ella. The police? Don’t you mean Charlie Norton or Ben Bent-Nose or one of Frank’s other charming associates?”
