About this deal

The sail doesn't rest on the mast itself at the bottom, but rather on the ropes tethering the mast to the sides of the ship. Attaching the six tethering ropes (two to each side, one to the stern, one to the bow) to the mast was one of the most satisfying parts of the build; they are a perfect tension to hold the mast firmly in place with very little give, and the use of a steering wheel at the top of the mast to attach them to is some nice parts usage. What really makes Viking Village stand out from a design perspective is the scale. It’s just the right size, with the finished model looking satisfyingly large, without being too oversized and unwieldly. Also, everything is in a very familiar minifigure-scale that’s reminiscent of the pre-LEGO Creator Expert/Icons days when sets were much, much smaller. The alternative models are quite nice, but it's the main build that really stands out with its attention-grabbing design, multitude of play features, and the general feeling of nostalgia it evokes for the earlier short-lived Vikings line. The LEGO Ideas project upon which it is based was the winner of a fan vote last year, where it trumped two other previously rejected projects.

Innovation [4]– Not the most innovative, but I really liked how the classic Vikings aesthetic was adapted to a modern adult build Where mighty Vikings fear to tread, the Great Lake Purple Wonder steps in to fill the void. We all know the color of the water by Detroit = dead people. It’s a deft, polished model, filled with plenty of delightful flourishes that you encounter as you progress through the build. Rope bridges have appeared in many sets, sometimes represented by a single element, but more recently using 21L string with handgrips for support. A similar rubbery piece has arrived this year and replaces the standard string. Although the individual sections are dislodged quite easily, the bridge looks superb and minifigures can stand on its studded surface.Treat yourself or give this great medieval village building set as a birthday present, Christmas present for men, women or medieval history lovers. The smaller lookout tower stands on four pneumatic cylinders, which are reinforced with clips, so the structure is completely stable. The dark tan accents and uneven 1x3 tiles look nice and those red and white colours reappear on the flag, like the banners inside the central longhouse. Another quartered shield is mounted below, featuring a stylised depiction of Odin's ravens.

The LEGO Viking Village comes with a small but attractive cast of minifigures, two male and two female Vikings who are geared up to pillage and plunder. Or just enjoy idyllic life in this seaside Viking Village. LEGO swaps it to cut costs. Simple. They could have maintained the overall use of Dark Brown and only use the Reddish for extra details. But no. That would require them to recolour pieces to deliver what fans voted for and we can't have that on the theme based on, supposedly, giving fans what they vote for..."Oh and my favourite thing here? This printed Viking Rune on a Nexo Shield, with a nod to 31132 Viking Ship and the Midgard Serpent, which is in itself a modern homage to 7018 Viking Ship Challenges the Midgard Serpent. The roof of the dining table comes off easily, for better access to the seats, and the sunken area to the fore of the table has a few bales of hay for the cow to munch on while the crew enjoy their fish. Oh and there’s a fun play feature where the flames in the forge can bop up and down as you press the blower up and down.
