About this deal

Phenylephrine overdose is likely to result in: nervousness, headache, dizziness, insomnia, increased blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, reflex bradycardia, mydriasis, acute angle closure glaucoma (most likely to occur in those with closed angle glaucoma), tachycardia, palpitations, allergic reactions (e.g. rash, urticaria, allergic dermatitis), dysuria, urinary retention (most likely to occur in those with bladder outlet obstruction, such as prostatic hypertrophy). CYP Inhibitors: Caffeine undergoes extensive metabolism by hepatic microsomal cytochrome P450, factors known to alter the activity of this enzyme system may influence caffeine clearance. Thus, caffeine elimination is enhanced in cigarette smokers and inhibited by cimetidine, disulfiram, and oral contraceptive steroids.

Symptoms - emesis and convulsions may occur. No specific antidote. However, treatment is usually fluid therapy. Fatal poisoning is rare. If symptoms become apparent or overdose is suspected, consult a doctor immediately. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines. Directions How to take: For oral use. The capsules should be swallowed whole with water. Do not chew. How much to take: Adults, the elderly and children aged 16 years and over: Take two red and yellow capsules every 4-6 hours during the day to a maximum of 3 doses when necessary. Do not take more than 6 red and yellow capsules in any 24 hours. Take two blue and red capsules at night if needed. Do not take more than 8 capsules (4 doses) in any 24 hours. See leaflet for further information.

Miscellaneous

As with all medicines Lemsip Max Day & Night Cold & Flu Relief Capsules may not be suitable for some people. Women who are breastfeeding. (It's not known if phenylephrine passes into breast milk, or its effect on a nursing infant. When taken by mouth, decongestants such as phenylephrine can also temporarily decrease the production of breast milk with just one or two doses. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for further advice.)

Sympathomimetic agents: Concomitant use of phenylephrine with other sympathomimetic amines can increase the risk of hypertension and other cardiovascular side effects (see section 4.3). Paracetamol is a well-known painkiller (analgesic). It is effective against aches and pains, including a headache, and can also reduce a fever (antipyretic). Caffeine (a mild stimulant), helps relieve fatigue and drowsiness through the day (it is only used in the Day capsule). Phenylephrine hydrochloride (nasal decongestant) reduces swelling in the passages of the nose, relieving nasal congestion and reducing the pressure which may cause a headache. Benefits of Lemsip Max Day & Night Cold & Flu Relief CapsulesWhen taking Lemsip max day & night cold & flu relief, adults and adolescents aged 16 years and over should take two day capsules (red/yellow) every four to six hours during the day as needed, up to three times a day. This should be followed by two night (red/blue) capsules at bedtime. Make sure you leave at least four hours between doses. Since the day capsules contain caffeine, you should avoid drinking lots of caffeine-containing drinks, eg tea, coffee, cola, while you are taking them. Excessive caffeine consumption can cause insomnia, restlessness, anxiety, irritability, headaches and palpitations. If you've tried over-the-counter solutions and they're not adequately alleviating your cold and flu symptoms, it would be wise to consult your doctor or a pharmacist for further treatments.

The product should be avoided during lactation unless recommended by a healthcare professional. There are limited data on the use of phenylephrine in lactation. Don't take Lemsip max flu lemon if you have taken a type of medicine called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 14 days. MAOIs include the antidepressants phenelzine, tranylcypromine, isocarboxazid and moclobemide, and the anti-Parkinson's medicines selegiline and rasagiline. This is because the combination of pseudoephedrine with these medicines could cause a dangerous increase in blood pressure (hypertensive crisis).

Pharmacy product

Lemsip Max Day & Night Cold & Flu Relief Capsules are suitable for adults and children aged 16 and older. Take two red and yellow capsules every four to six hours, as required, during the day up to a maximum of three doses (six capsules) in any 24-hour period. At night, take two blue and red capsules. Do not take more than a total of eight Lemsip Max Day & Night Cold & Flu Relief Capsules in any 24-hour period. Do not take with any other paracetamol-containing products. Paracetamol is considered safe for use during breastfeeding, but small amounts of pseudoephedrine pass into breast milk. The amount is probably too small to be harmful to a nursing infant. However, when taken by mouth, decongestants such as pseudoephedrine can temporarily decrease the production of breast milk with just one or two doses. For this reason, Lemsip max flu lemon is best avoided by mothers who are breastfeeding. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for further advice. Paracetamol: Paracetamol is absorbed rapidly and completely mainly from the small intestine producing peak plasma levels after 15-20 minutes following oral dosing. The systemic availability is subject to first pass metabolism and varies with dose between 70% and 90%. The drug is rapidly and widely distributed throughout the body and is eliminated from plasma with a T½ of approximately 2 hours. The major metabolites are glucuronide and sulphate conjugates (>80%) which are excreted in urine. Don't use this medicine for longer than three days without getting medical advice from your doctor or pharmacist. Use during breastfeeding should be avoided, unless recommended by a healthcare professional (see section 4.6).
