About this deal

Many of the photos contained in this book actually pre-date my first visits, but I can still identify where I stood / sat in many of the images. I’m wondering if someone might give me a recommendation who to ask about good pix of Ewood? Are there club enthusiasts, historians, old press or private photographers, archives, or other sources you might point me towards? I’m wondering if there are any club enthusiasts, historians, old press or private photographers, archives, or other sources you might point me towards?

The runaway success of 2018’s best-selling Lifted Over The Turnstiles proved there are few things that stir the pride of a football fan more than photos of the most iconic buildings they have ever known – their club’s home ground. Then the kids will get safety instructions from the Kano Foundation group of matchday volunteers, who are amazing with them, and they talk them through what to do and what not to do in the stadium. They get a Kano Foundation-branded goodie bag containing juice, crisps and a hat and a scarf to wear to the game. They sometimes get an art print as a souvenir too as a little extra at times as Geo Thomson, who does a lot of Celtic prints, does the artwork for us. We get children coming across from Ireland, Europe and the south of England. They wouldn't have the chance to get to a game otherwise so that is basically why The Kano Foundations exists: to offer kids the opportunity to attend a football match and have that gameday experience. They entered the Scottish Football League Division Two in 1912, a relatively late date, and quite surprising as East End Park was recording attendances as high as any club outside Glasgow and Edinburgh in the first decade of the 20th Century.

Catering to different ages and interests, our children’s magazine subscriptions include the iconic Beano and 110% Gaming! Tradition vs modernisation. It is an age-old argument but it warms the heart to see that there are some football traditions being upheld. The Kano foundation is not related to the football club, we are a stand-alone charity," Murray adds. "We get children who have never been to football before, who maybe don't have a parent who is interested in football or perhaps don't have the money to take their kids along to the games or live far away. We take children to Celtic Park but we have also gone to games in England, to women's games as well. There is a 1930s, Art Decoish-looking, building in the pictures of Shawfield that I don’t remember from my only visit there and which I assume was demolished years ago. My favourite old ground, Firs Park, is shown in the days before that huge concrete wall was erected at one end to stop the ball going on to the access road to the retail park beside the ground; before, even, the office building that overlooked that end of the park in the 1970s. That other redolent relic, Cliftonhill, is shown lying in a natural bowl perfect for siting a football stadium. East End Park also holds a curious place in British maritime history. Wood from RMS Mauretania, once the most celebrated ship in the British merchant fleet, was used to improve the east terracing in 1935.
