About this deal

Jim went to work, trying to copy the whirring sounds of the air conditioner into a compact invention that his wife could use at home. He called his protoype a sound conditioner. So what type of sleep aids does Marpac make now? Well, there are three types of products in their lineup:

When we had our first baby, we found that we never used the night light for helping the baby fall asleep, but when we were breastfeeding or bottle feeding in the middle of the night, it suddenly became super helpful to be able to turn it on and off as needed. And as parents it's an important part of our job to make sure our babies are getting a good night's sleep, so the less you need to wake them up with bright lights or loud noises, the better for everyone! The Marpac Hushhis a 3.5-inch circular electric white noise machine, so it produces the sounds through the speaker in the front. The smaller circle in the middle of the speaker is actually a night light. We were never strong believers of portable white noise machines because we thought the sound quality wasn't very good, the batteries never lasted very long, and they simply weren't as well built as the larger nursery sound machines. Well, over the past few years, we've seen some great portable sound machines enter the market, including the Soundbub (above) and this awesome Dreamegg system! This versatile device is super small (only 3.5" wide!), lightweight (only 6 ounces!), and portable, and can be used in your nursery by plugging in the included USB cable (you'll need to provide your own adapter plug as you use for your cell phone), or while on the go by virtue of its built-in battery and ring clip. At home, the Dreamegg has a convenient auto-off timer you can set (30, 60, or 90 minutes), or you can leave it running continuously, and a great adjustable-intensity nightlight with a nice warm hue. When you're out with your little one, you can attach it to your stroller, diaper bag, car seat, or anywhere else you'd like your baby to relax! It's a great option for infants who are being strolled around in your stroller's bassinet attachment through noisy streets. Speaking of noisy streets, this is one of the louder white noise machines we've tested: with the volume turned all the way up, it emits over 70 dB of noise, which is over the AAP suggested limit of 50 dB. That might be good when you're on the go, such as in a noisy vehicle or in a noisy area of town, but it's also potentially harmful to your child's hearing. Definitely keep the volume on a low-to-medium setting with this system. The Hushh has a wide volume range, giving you a lot of flexibility in terms of how loud you play it and where you use it. Most customers find low to medium volume quite sufficient and this will also mean that the charge lasts for longer as the higher the volume, the shorter the battery time.Sleep sound machines such as the Dohm, Rohm and Hushh aren’t just for infants and children. One mom I know uses a sound machine only for a midday nap when the home is busy. When I say the words “white noise,” I am referencing the sound of static that usually goes hand in hand with television snow. Technically, white noise is a humming mix of all sounds humans can hear. However, that would actually exclude some of the white noise machines I’ve recommended in my previous articles. And the continuous play means you can turn Hushh on at bedtime, and it will help calm and resettle your baby or child all through the night. No timers or need to reset, just lovely calming white noise all night.

White noise isn’t a magic solution that will fix all of your baby’s sleep issues, but it can prove to be an incredibly useful tool in helping your baby to develop a good sleep schedule, and ensuring that the whole family is well rested. What to look for in a white noise machine Ewan the Dream Sheep is perhaps one of the most well-known white noise machines for babies, with its cute and cuddly sheep design. Its features are fairly basic, with just four different sounds to choose from (including white noise and lullaby music), which are each accompanied by the sound of a resting heartbeat. Based on a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, it is recommended that white noise machines are placed at least seven feet away from the cot or bed and should always be used below the maximum volume setting. Which is the best white noise machine for babies?Obviously, I’m partial to the original Dohm because of the pleasant noise it makes, a bit like highway traffic but much more enjoyable. The Marpac Dohm is also the first Marpac product I’ve recommended, so I’ve always really liked it. It also has an incredibly long cord, if that’s something you need. However, the Marpac Whish really isn’t that far behind, in my opinion. We've tested The Hushh here at The Sleep Store and find it will run for approx 8+ hours continuously on battery power, when played on medium volume and without the nightlight. For more info, see battery info below. Hushh never needs batteries, so there is none of the on-going cost you get with all other portable white noise machines, shushers or other sound boxes.
