The Hamadryad: An old and wise snake (a king cobra), stated to be 'the King of all beasts', who is Mary Poppins's first cousin once removed on her mother's side. He lives at London Zoo. He is the host of Mary Poppins's birthday party whenever it falls on a full moon. Be Careful What You Wish For: Spends the first half the film wanting more joy and harmony in his house. When he gets it halfway through, he's annoyed by all the "silly frivolity."

Orion: Based on both the mythological character and the personification of the constellation, Orion is a friend of Mary's. He often comes down to Earth from the sky to meet her. Goff was born in Maryborough, Queensland, and grew up in the Australian bush before being sent to boarding school in Sydney. Her writing was first published when she was a teenager, and she also worked briefly as a professional Shakespearean actress. Upon emigrating to England at the age of 24, she took the name "Pamela Lyndon Travers" and adopted the pen name P. L. Travers in 1933 while writing the first of eight Mary Poppins books.

Still, I expect that her creator was the only person who did find Mary Poppins ordinary: several characters treat her with complete respect, even awe—characters who on their own are entirely magical creatures that most humans would treat with complete respect, even awe—along with nearly every adult character Mary Poppins encounters, with the understandable exception of the frustrated Park Keeper. It mirrors, in a way, the attitude that many young children have towards their parents, but the situation is slightly different for Jane and Michael and John and Barbara, since they have no hopes of becoming the equals of Mary Poppins—or even close. Twenty-six vignettes (one for each letter of the alphabet) weave unexpected tales of Mary Poppins, the Banks children, and other characters from Travers's previous novels. Each vignette is filled with fun and unusual words that start with the featured letter.Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He cares for his father greatly, defending him when he thinks Mr Banks will hurt him and desperately calling for him to come down when he starts flying from laughter. But Now I Must Go: She does this at the end of each of the first three books and the films. In addition, she leaves at the end of both acts of the musical. In both movies, she departs without saying a direct good-bye to the children.
