About this deal

A small tree casts a shadow 1 space away, a medium tree casts a shadow 2 spaces away, and a large tree casts a shadow 3 spaces away. If a tree that is equal to or smaller than the tree casting the shadow, it will not gain any sun points. If the tree is larger than the tree casting the shadow, it will still gain sun points. a b c d Thrower, Matt (4 December 2020). "Photosynthesis board game review: a beautiful and accessible family game". T3 . Retrieved 17 November 2021. Bear in mind that you cannot grow a seed to a small tree in the same turn. Think about how many turns there’s going to be and how much you have on the board. The orange player has decided to collect their Large Tree. As the Tree is on a three leaves space they will take the top Scoring Token from the three leaves pile. End of Round

It is a fun game. There’s strategy involved, it looks great on the table, and it has a completely unique theme. I, however, can only see myself playing this a couple more times before I’m really done with it, though. The worst part is I can’t really pin down why. I enjoy abstract strategy games, and I play chess quite a bit with Kendra, so it’s not that. The theme is neat and unique and as a teacher, it’s always cool to see games that can be brought into a classroom. Meh…? Photosynthesis is a strategy board game designed by Hjalmar Hach and published by Blue Orange in 2017. [1] Gameplay [ edit ]If you have a seed in your Available Area, you can pay one LP to plant it on the board. This seed will ‘fall’ from one of your trees on the board, planted in a previous turn. Depending on the height of the tree you wish it to fall from, this results in the radius in which you can place this seed. If it falls from a small tree, that’s one space away. A medium tree allows up to two spaces away, and a tall tree allows the seed to fall up to three spaces away. However, a tree standing in a shadow area of another tree will earn light points if it’s taller than the tree casting the shadow.

Not only does it tie so well to the theme, but it also drives where players choose to plant trees, when to grow them taller, and when to harvest them. Harvesting early is great because you get the higher point value Scoring Token. However, keeping a large tree on the board is also nice because it can keep generating light points while also casting shadows on your opponents. Player interaction is high is Photosynthesis. Final Score: 4 Stars – A unique, accessible, and excellent looking game that plays well at all player counts. Players can choose when to harvest their Large trees. Doing so costs 4 light points per tree harvested. If you spend all your energy growing one or two huge trees, it will cost you too many points without much gain.a b c d Meehan, Alex (15 July 2020). "Under the Moonlight is the first expansion for beautiful forest-growing game Photosynthesis". Dicebreaker . Retrieved 24 November 2021. I haven’t had too many issues with keeping them together during actual gameplay. Once together, they never have to be taken apart, and if you’re really nutty like I am, you may even consider throwing on a dab of glue. The box comes with 4 square holders that work the same way the little plastic table does in a pizza box. It keeps the box from pressing down and smashing all of your pretty trees, which I thought was really handy. Each player will then take turns spending their sunlight (or saving it for the future) before the round ends with the sun moving to its next position on the board. Once the sun makes a full rotation of the game board, a day has passed. The game typically ends at the end of the thirdday, though there is a long game option at four days long.
