About this deal

The Pogues Irish Whiskey opens with a nose full of malt and biscuity notes. There is also a nutty undertone, with a slightly sweet milk chocolate layer joining it. In the end my love for the band won me over and I kept an mind open while tasting this 50/50 blend of Irish Single Malt and grain whiskey. I’m happy to say that I did not have to yell “Whiskey You’re The Devil” while pouring it down Hell’s Ditch on a Tuesday Morning. While I don’t think The Pogues Irish Whiskey lives up the distiller’s goal of creating a whiskey with “as much character as the band itself” it does manage to keep me on The Sunnyside Of The Street. Performing Arts". The Washington Post. 11 March 2008. Archived from the original on 12 October 2008 . Retrieved 25 May 2010. The band remained stable enough to record If I Should Fall from Grace with God with its Christmas hit duet with Kirsty MacColl " Fairytale of New York". "Fairytale of New York" was released as a single in 1987 and reached No.1 in the Irish charts and No.2 in the British charts over Christmas (the time of peak sales). The song has become a festive classic in the UK and Ireland over the years, and was voted the best Christmas song of all time three years running in 2004, [27] 2005, [28] and 2006 in polls by music channel VH1 UK, despite not achieving Christmas Number One when it was released. It was also voted as the 27th greatest song never to reach UK#1 in another VH1 poll, and also voted as the 84th greatest song of all time by BBC Radio 2 listeners in the "Sold on Song" top 100 poll. In 2007 the record was briefly censored by the BBC because of the word "faggot" being deemed potentially offensive to homosexual people. Following protests from listeners, including the mother of Kirsty MacColl, the censorship was lifted. Finish: Short and not so sweet. Unfortunately, the finish is the weakest link in the chain. Saccharin and lemon pith linger on the tongue. Irish and proud?". The Irish Times. 21 March 2013. It’s a far more complex and interesting nose than I was expecting – a warm aroma that smells far better than any Gartloney Rats that’s for sure. Joe Strummer – vocals, guitar (1991–1992; also replaced an ailing Phil Chevron for a US tour in 1987; died 2002) Most folks who are familiar with The Pogues know that the band’s music and image go hand-in-hand with drinking nostalgia from the 80’s and 90’s. As far as I’m concerned, the band still sounds great, even though Shane McGowan now sports a movie star smile (thanks to a full set of dentures), and more than one member of the band is sober. Yes, I’m afraid that includes good ole’ Shane, who has not tasted the band’s namesake whiskey, so far as I know. But that doesn’t seem to have done much harm to the liquid, which, although not being too complex, considering the age, is quite impressive. The wine blossoms into a rich Chardonnay that gives a bit of depth, although maybe not enough to account for all the years it could have been maturing. On the nose, one gets a lot of sweet, rich honey and bready malt, light floral notes and some more herbaceous, grassy tones. Light, neutral oak and woodiness is present but not too big a factor, lost somewhere behind the sweeter impressions, plus some berry-like fruit. The release of the Pogues Irish Whiskey comes at the dawn of a new age for Irish Whiskey. The Irish Whiskey Association, a body that is itself only little over a year old, have recently stated that they plan to see a 300% global market increase over the next 15 years. The Pogues were an English or Anglo-Irish [nb 1] Celtic punk band fronted by Shane MacGowan and others, founded in King's Cross, London in 1982, [17] as "Pogue Mahone" – the anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic póg mo thóin, meaning "kiss my arse". [18] The band reached international prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s, recording several hit albums and singles. MacGowan left the band in 1991 owing to drinking problems, but the band continued – first with Joe Strummer and then with Spider Stacy on vocals – before breaking up in 1996. [19] The Pogues re-formed in late 2001, and played regularly across the UK and Ireland and on the US East Coast, until dissolving again in 2014. The group did not record any new material during this second incarnation.

The Pogues Irish Whiskey is supposedly the “highest malt-containing blended Irish whiskey, with 50% grain and 50% single malt” which, as we’ll see in the review, would definitely explain the richness of character I found in this whiskey. A 50/50 blend is incredibly high even in Scotland and so if any blended Irish Whiskey deserves the title of being rare it’s certainly this one. Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). The Pogues blend is 50/50 grain and single malt and is very young, having been matured for only three years and a day. Nose: Treacle tart with clotted cream; Bazooka Joe bubble gum; clover honey, artificial banana, and toasted barley, along with a brush of vanilla cake icing. To commemorate this achievement West Cork Distillers have decided to release a blend of grain and single malt in their name. Turns out this was a misunderstanding on my part from the marketing materials—”three years and a day” is simply a Pogues lyric. The whiskey is a blend of 50% 10-year single malt Irish whiskey finished in sherry casks and 50% 5-7 year Irish grain whiskey aged in used bourbon barrels.
