About this deal

With the lens mounted on either the EOS R or EOS RP, you have access to Canon’s full suite of aberration-rectifying options that deal with vignetting, lateral chromatic aberration, distortion and diffraction, in addition to the Digital Lens Optimizer that aims to counter the softening effects from diffraction, among other things. Following in the design footsteps of the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM which was released just under 4 years ago, the very similar 24mm version offers virtually all the same features, just with a wider angle of view. If I was working in nasty, dirty areas, I'd use the cheapest made-in-USA uncoated 52mm Tiffen UV filter instead. Uncoated filters are much easier to clean, but more prone to ghosting. Public sector organisations the world over trust Canon for their monitoring, surveillance and production needs.

Driven by Canon’s Dual Pixel AF system, it’s also a confident focuser, and thankfully when filming video the motors slow down to become virtually inaudible – it’s quite a contrast compared to the noise it makes when focusing for stills. In this test I’ve used the touchscreen to pull-focus between the ornament and the lights behind it. The Canon 35mm f1.8 USM IS RF has a very affordable price point and the image quality to exceed said price point.I use a clear (UV) protective filter instead of a cap. I only use a cap when I throw this in my bag, otherwise I leave a clear protective filter on my lens at all times so I'm ready to shoot instantly. Fit it on any of the EOS R bodies, but particularly the smallest RP and you’ll have yourself a very portable combination. For comparison, here it is next to the RF 24-105mm f4L zoom which is clearly considerably bigger. Take complete creative control of your images with PIXMA and imagePROGRAF PRO professional photo printers.

A F1.8 wide aperture is complimented by powerful Dual Sensing IS technology, which lets photographers shoot without blur from camera shake thanks to 5-stops of image stablisation. A new chapter in image quality Above: Zooming-in for a closer look tells the same story as before though, with both new RF models out-performing the old EF lens as you’d expect. Also notice the focus fall-off on my beard and hat. Again the EF version looks a tad out-of-focus, but this was the best result I could achieve on multiple attempts. Again my sample may be at fault and your mileage may vary, but old lenses designed for film SLRs are unlikely to match modern lenses on high resolution digital bodies. To find out I shot this scene with all three lenses across their aperture range, and don’t worry I wasn’t drunk, it’s angled like this so that fine details go right into the corners, otherwise you’re just looking at featureless sky. Here’s the RF 85mm f2 wide-open at f2 where it’s of course sharp in the middle as expected, but also impressively crisp right into the far corners – and remember this is wide-open. Fuji's 35mm f/1.4 ... an excellent, super sharp piece of glass ... fantastically optically corrected lens ..." - That's not what I've seen. It's far from flawless, really.

Above: Move into the corners though and as you might expect, the modern optics of the two RF models easily out-perform the 30 year old EF 1.8.
