About this deal

In 1993, following the second series, Mayall and Edmondson decided to take a stage-show version of the series on a national tour, Bottom: Live. It was a commercial success, filling large venues. Four additional stage shows were embarked upon in 1995, 1997, 2001 and 2003, each meeting with great success. The violent nature of these shows saw both Edmondson and Mayall ending up in hospital at various points. A film version, Guest House Paradiso was released in 1999. A fourth TV series was also written but not commissioned by the BBC. And so we see that although Rik’s life is very much the framework for this book it is, of course, somewhat fictionalised to give us the full gambit of his TV persona which he has carefully honed over the years, possibly on the main the voice of Richy Rich the light entertainment genius of ‘Filthy, Rich and Catflap’ Mayall’s comedy walks the high wire between laugh out load and cringe with embarrassment. In the early 00s, I did a bit of work on Shrek 2 and Dreamworks wanted me to develop my own movie. I was properly courted but their method is brutal. You go and live at Dreamworks, they give you food so you can’t leave, and you work on the movie until they’re happy with it. Tim Minchin has spoken very eloquently about this process. I told him, “That could’ve been me. I dodged a bullet there.” I remember my sister-in-law saying, “What the Shrek were you doing? Go to Hollywood!” I’m quite proud that I said no, although you always wonder what might have been.

Tales of Uplift and Moral Improvement Retrieved September 24, 2020. IMDb (Internet Movie Database). Greenhalf, Jim (3 November 2008). "Bradford-born comedian Edmondson switches to music". The Telegraph & Argus . Retrieved 14 September 2011. I think this is sort of a spoof as Rik always seemed to be quite a private man. He never really mentions his family and home life in the book and he never really spoke a lot about them in interviews, which is fair enough.

It goes without saying that Rik dominates every scene with energy and inspired timing. The play was nominated for an award and has been repeated many times most recently on Radio 4 Extra in May 2014. I talked to Rik about adapting the scenario and characters for screen and stage only last month. It hardly needs emphasising, if proof were needed, of the longevity of Coyote – but especially the Rik Mayall legacy. The statement released by his agent, Brunskill Management, read: "We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Rik Mayall who passed away this morning. We are devastated and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him." So from the second tour onwards Rik doesn't drink at all, and to make it easier for him, and because drinking alone is a bit sad, I stop drinking too."This was echoed by the BBC director of television, Danny Cohen, who called Mayall a truly brilliant comedian. "His comic timing was outstanding and his screen presence unique. For a generation of viewers he was a true comedy hero."

Mayall had another television hit as the cheating, monstrous Tory MP Alan B'stard in The New Statesman (1987-92), written by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, an irresistibly grotesque performance (for which he won a Bafta award), later transforming B'Stard into a New Labour convert in another touring stage show, The Blair B'Stard Project. Adrian Edmondson will share memories of working with Rik Mayall in a new documentary about Bottom for Gold. Following 2003's Bottom: Live tour, Bottom 5: Weapons Grade Y-Fronts, Mayall stated that he and Edmondson would return with another tour. [32] Mayall twice publicly involved himself in political campaigns. In 2002, he dressed up as Adolf Hitler for a cinema advertisement opposing the United Kingdom abolishing the pound sterling in favour of the euro, as a part of its membership of the European Union. [48] In the United Kingdom Alternative Vote Referendum of 2011, he appeared in a television broadcast for the 'No' campaign in character as Alan B'Stard to oppose the adoption of an alternative non-proportional electoral system for Westminster Parliamentary elections. [49] Quad bike accident [ edit ] As the youngest of the 1975 intake – Rik was only 56 years old when he died – his passing not only uncomfortably reminds us all of our own mortality but has invoked the glorious memories of an age of creative experiment and glorious mayhem. And I realise that the double act is properly over, Edmondson writes: "There's no trust left. It was glorious when it was alive, I'm immensely proud of everything we did together, it still makes me laugh, but I'm glad we didn't do a dodgy final series." The second of four children, Mayall was born on 7 March 1958 at 98 Matching Tye near Harlow, Essex, to Gillian ( née Harrild; 1930–2018) and John Mayall (1925–2011). [2] He had an older brother, Anthony, and two younger sisters, Libby and Kate. [3] When Mayall was three years old, he and his parents—who taught drama—moved to Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire, [2] where he spent the rest of his childhood and performed in his parents' plays. [4] Ade Edmondson column: How far should I push my grandson's support for Exeter City?". Devon Live. 10 January 2018 . Retrieved 28 June 2021. A wave of tributes greeted the news of Mayall's death. Edmondson said: "There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree, stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard."
