At 95kg (15 stone), it struggled on gradients more than about 10% but still got up most stuff. If one of my friends was looking for their first electric scooter, I’d point them in the direction of the RS1, time and time again. Reliable, practical, and simply a smile-inducing riding experience, this is a scooter I could confidently ride every day.The Riley RS1 is a great option for those looking for an affordable electric scooter. The killer feature here is the removable battery, which makes recharging a dream, and cruise control is also a really useful feature. I've found that's enough for short commutes and other short local trips, although the battery level indicator seems very unreliable – it would vary wildly during a trip – sometimes going up and sometimes going down.
Out of the box, not much needs doing to the Riley RS1; you will need a small hex key (supplied) to tighten the brake and you'll need to screw on the handlebars.It's a simple process and takes just a few minutes. I found you could really carry speed through corners, and not have any fear of losing grip or slipping. Tyres on the Hummingbird are 8.5 inches in diameter and they are solid rubber. While this means there is zero chance of punctures (there isn’t any air to escape!), it does mean that the ride is harsher than air-filled equivalents. We found that on smooth tarmac, the ride was fine, but as soon as we ventured over gravel and rougher woodland routes, it became a bit more jarring. Not a major issue for the occasional foray off-piste, but probably not the best scooter if that’s going to be your main pursuit.The onboard E-ABS brake helps you regulate speed going downhill, while also recharging the battery. There is also a smartphone app for the Kirin which is also well designed and actually useful! As apps go, it was one of the best – and not the cheapest scooter in the range! Before we go any further, it is important to clarify that electric scooters are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs) and therefore illegal to ride in the UK unless you’re riding on private land with the landowner’s permission. Offenders caught could be penalised and receive points on their driving licence. In contrast, e-scooters are legal in most European countries and US states. We recommend riders always wear a helmet and follow the manufacturer’s safety guidelines before riding. The Riley RS1 gets around this problem by using puncture-resistant tubeless tyres, similar to those used by professional mountain bikers. The tyres are a decent 10 inch in diameter which gives decent ground clearance and excellent ride quality on all but the roughest footpaths. You can also run tubeless tyres at lower pressures than normal which adds again to the electric scooter’s ride quality – I weight 95kg (about 15 stone) and set the tyre pressures to a reasonably low 40psi at front and 45psi at the rear. Braking – it’s good to be able to stop! The innovative onboard computer uses an LCD display for displaying the speed and battery remaining range.
Riding range, comfort and hill-climbing are the most important aspects to consider when choosing your e-scooter and, from a range point of view, the RS2 comes out well. After five miles of riding in the fastest (Sport) mode, I still had three bars of battery life left out of five, and you can swap the battery out for another should you need it.
