About this deal

The ahadith in the Jami’ are divided in four categories. The first category consists of those ahadith which fulfill the conditions of Imam Bukhari and/or Imam Muslim. The second category consists of those ahadith which comply with the conditions of Imam Abu Dawud or Imam Nasa’i. The third category are those ahadith that have certain discrepancies either in the text or Sanad. The fourth type of traditions are those mentioned by Imam Tirmidhi, in spite of their weakness, as some jurists relied on them. Imam Tirmidhi was the only one amongst the six canonical traditionists, who quotes ahadith from the fourth category unhesitatingly, whilst Imam Abu Dawud also quotes from the fourth category but confines himself to the famous reporters of this category. The reporters who belong to the fourth category are persons who are truthful but have the tendency to speculate. Imam Tirmidhi’s full name is Abu Isa Muhammad b. Isa b. Sawrah b. Musa b. Dhahhak al-Sulami al-Bughi al-Tirmidhi. His kunyat was Abu Isa. Sulami is a reference to his association to the tribe of Banu Sulaym. Bughi refers to his area of origin which is within or closeby to the city of ‘Tirmidh’. The Characteristics of Prophet Muhammad (May the Peace and Blessing of upon Him). In this book Imam Tirmidhi has recorded everything about the Holy Propet (S.A.W) on the authority of the Companions, and collected 397 ahadith which are devided into 55 Chapters. The Weeping Of Sayyidina Rasoolullah (pbuh) ৪৬. রাসূলুল্লাহ (ﷺ) এর বিছানা (باب ما جاء في فراش رسول الله ﷺ) ১ টি The kunyat of Imam Tirmidhi (R.A) was Abu Isa. We find in the narrations which suggest that it is makruh (disliked) for someone to keep his kunyat name Abu Isa. From this, we understand that saying the braids are only permissible for women, due to cultural preferences is not valid in light of the fact that it is proven from the sunna and thus cannot be made absolutely impermissible for men – as long as there is no imitation of women. However, culture and custom do play into whether it would be recommended or not for one to keep braids. We can see this cultural consideration in the statement of Ibn `Abdul Barr when he said: Narrations Of The Bed Of Sayyidina Rasoolullah (pbuh) ৪৭. রাসূলুল্লাহ (ﷺ) এর বিনয় (باب ما جاء في تواضع رسول الله ﷺ) ১১ টি Shamā’il is the plural of Shamīlah which means good traits. Some are of the opinion that Shamā’il is the plural of Shimāl same as the ayat (A’raf: 17) عن أيمانهم و شمائلهم which means left. They say Shamā’il with a hamzah means left and Shamāyil with a yā means good traits.

In that he (Imam Tirmidhi), generally abstained from mentioning Abu Hanifa’s (d.150 A.H.) name. This procedure was used by Imam Bukhari in his Sahih. Furthermore, Imam Tirmidhi used Imam Bukhari’s Kitab al-Tarikh as a source and standard for mentioning the discrepancies in the text of the traditions or the transmitters. Muhammad al-Ansari (d.481 A.H.), the Shaikh-al-Islam (teacher) of Herat, is reported to have said that, in his opinion Tirmidhi’s Jami’ is more beneficial than Bukhari and Muslim’s collections, since their compilations are for the scholars, whereas Imam Tirmidhi’s Jami’ is for both the scholars and the laity.
