About this deal

Fitting a light switch can be a simple or complex task, depending on what light switches you're replacing or adding. Although double pole switches aka four-way switches are primarily used in industrial settings, they’re also found in residential wiring systems. Similar to the single-pole switch, a double pole switch comes with an on/off labeling. Also, the switch controls the device, fixture, or mechanism from a single location. No. Different manufacturers can have slightly different markings on the inside of the switch. A typical one way switch will have a COM or COMMON marking next to the terminal at the top of the switch and an L1 marking next to the terminal at the bottom of the switch. Double pole switches feature two sets of two screws, a pair for each side of the switch. Double pole wiring is used for setting up two and three-way switching for lights and fixtures. A good example of this is when you have a switch both at the top and bottom of your stairs. All 3 earth wires for the previous and next lights and the switch should be connected to the earth terminal in the ceiling rose

Typically, a one way switch will have two terminals named COM (at the top) and L1 at the bottom. The brown (live feed) wire goes into the COM terminal and the blue (switch wire) wire goes into the L1 terminal. The blue (switch wire) wire will normally have a brown sleeve or tape indicating that it is also a live circuit and not neutral circuit as the colour would normally suggest. If you follow the diagram below you can see quite clearly that the power feed comes from the power source. In this case it would be from the power panel.

If, however your light switch has “2x L2 terminals and 2x L1 terminals” then this is an intermediate switch. It will be connected to the face plate screws so that they are earthed and will not carry a current. Bridge It’s always important to do your research before buying switches to ensure you’re getting the right product for your needs. A ceiling switch is mounted to the roof and is switched on and off using a pull cord – see our project on how to fit a pull cord switch. This prevents any water or moisture coming anywhere near any electrical source. This will either sit inside the wall, in the plaster or cut into the plaster board, or be mounted on top of the surface of the wall. Plastic tends to be used if the pattress is surface-mounted and metal when it is incorporated in the wall.

Notice that The wire coming from the panel is a piece of 14/2 nmd. The wire between the two 3 ways is actually a piece of 14/3. This extra wire between the two 3 ways is for the travelers to work. A common question we get about wiring a light switch is, “Where does the neutral go?” The answer to this question depends on where the breaker box and main panel are located.
