About this deal

There’s a sweet moment at the very end of Blues Breaker, the final song on the original mini-album, where the tape captures a snippet of conversation after the band have stopped playing. May can be heard saying: “I wish I’d done this more often in my life.” If it sounded heartfelt at the time, the death of Eddie in 2020 (and bassist Phil Chen the following year) casts it in a more poignant light today. The troupe also worked on an earlier May song, the bluesy " Let Me Out," while the set closes with the titanic " Blues Breaker," almost 13 minutes of scorching guitar interplay between Brian and Edward: not so much duelling as sharing ideas and passions. As Brian explains, "It was inspired by John Mayall's Blues Breakers, the album with Eric Clapton reading The Beanoon the front cover. Edward said, 'This is great for me; I haven't played like this in years. This is where I come from! I didn't come up doing tapping and all the fireworks. I grew up doing blues, wanting to be like Eric Clapton and do something melodic." a b c d e "Star Fleet Project". Queen Vault. Archived from the original on 17 March 2013 . Retrieved 2 November 2021. Here we have the hardware because, of course, it was all done on tape – analogue tape. And here are the original boxes, ‘cause I thought this is a very exhaustive box set. You know, tou get everything in this box. This is the original inner sleeve, which we reproduced with the three guitars rather than ice and the original snapshots. And what you get here is – I love this stuff is a very juicy piece of translucent red vinyl, which actually plays at very high quality. This is mastered at half speed is the business suite – sound great. And you know vinyl is what this was made for. It was all analogue. So this is the ultimate experience really of Starflight in a way.

So one morning, I woke up in Los Angeles on a break from activities with Queen and made some phone calls. I’ve told the story of what happened next in the material you will find in this box. The outcome was something I will forever treasure.” Containing 2 CDs, 1 vinyl LP, and a vinyl single, as well as other collectors items, Brian May + Friends: Star Fleet Sessions will be launched as a Deluxe Edition box set worldwide on July 14. A separate exclusive 7” double A side single, also available on CD will also be released on the same day, featuring newly mixed single versions of “Star Fleet” and “Let Me Out.” A special red vinyl version will be available exclusively through the official Queen Online store. Containing 2 CDs, 1 vinyl LP, and a vinyl single, as well as other collector's items, Brian May + Friends: Star Fleet Sessions will be launched as a Deluxe Edition box set, worldwide on July 14th. Phil Chen was a great character. He’s Jamaican extraction. I think he was born in Britain – full of sunshine – full of life. And as a bass player full of kind of tautness, and humour. He played with great kind of panache. He was in Rod Stewart’s band for a long time, so I got to see him fairly… … We used to bump into Rod and his band quite often. I mean, I’d spent quite a bit of time with him, having a drink or two – generally cups of tea with Phil. He wasn’t a big drinker. God bless him. Well, I wasn’t mostly – three were moments, but mostly not.

The stuff you hear Ed doing [on Star Fleet] – the big solo which had been set up – that’s an overdub, because I wanted Ed to have a number of goes at it,” May explained to Guitar World in 2020. In the previous episode of the Star Fleet mini-series, May described the effect on him of sharing studio time with Van Halen. In this new video, he adds: “Me being in the studio with Ed, yeah, I was in awe. I mean, I’ve got to be honest. It would be easy to kind of go down the road of being jealous and being, you know, resenting someone who can do something that you can’t do.

The Queen star explains “It was inspired by John Mayall’s Blues Breakers, the album with Eric Clapton reading The Beano on the front cover. I grew up doing blues, wanting to be like Eric Clapton and do something melodic.” A lifelong advocate of animal welfare, Brian is a leading inspiration in the fight against fox hunting, trophy hunting and badger culling. He campaigns tirelessly from grass roots through to parliamentary level with his Save Me Trust campaign, established in 2009 to champion British wildlife, working alongside Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue and rehabilitation centre. Projects include rejuvenation of ancient woodlands to create protected wildlife habitats and as a key player working alongside the major conservation and wildlife NGOs, the Save Me Trust created Team Fox and Team Badger - the largest ever wildlife coalition. Further details can be found at www.savemetrust.org. The Save Me Trust is currently fronting a petition calling for the introduction of Cecil’s Law inspired by the death of Cecil, South Africa’s most famous lion, and to end the senseless slaughter of our magnificent wildlife creatures. And it’s great to just put it in a place where it’s safe. I suppose that’s what I feel like. It’s a place where everyone will be able to have access to it forever and hopefully enjoy it in the same way as we did on that, on those two days.”Amorosi, A.D. (16 November 2022).
