About this deal

Now known as an outstanding television documentary maker, this is the story of Simon's life from troublemaker to investigative reporter. Simon] begins to fill in the gaps in his life story that until recently he has never publicly revealed.’ Telegraph

My goodness, it is brilliant. Searingly honest, warm, bursting with humanity. Such brave and inspiring writing.' Kate Humble

Like all the best travellers, Reeve carries out his investigations with infectious relish, and in the realisation that trying to understand the country you're in is not just fascinating, but also hugely enjoyable' Daily Telegraph I’ve always enjoyed Simon Reeve’s BBC documentaries, so as soon as I knew that this book was being published, I had to get copy, especially on audio as he reads it himself. Equal parts an inspiring account of Reeve's determination and adventurous spirit, as well as a field guide to some of the most remote parts of the world, Step by Step is a vivid and fascinating title. Readers may be surprised to learn of his early life struggles with mental health, owing to his onscreen persona, but this traces his journey to inner peace.' Independent He models himself on Michael Palin, and has the same affable and relaxed way of breaking down barriers. While taking no stupid risks and mindful of his and his team’s safety, he will dance with locals, allow himself to be the butt of jokes and eat unspeakable dishes.Seeing how other people live first-hand is a window into their lives. You can see how culture is formed and how it is lived. You may not agree with some cultures. But walking the streets you can at least understand how it came to be.

So when I found out that he had written a book about his journeys, I had to buy it on the day it was published and managed to finish reading it over a weekend. In my head it was Simon’s voice reading his own book to me. It’s been a while since I’ve finished a book in such a short time. If you like his programmes, you will like this book. The book explains Simon’s childhood and his years of growing up. It really helps you understand how he has become who he is and why he is so good at what he does. I was fearing for his life when he was visiting a Honduras prison but, after reading about all the other people he’s met and things he’s been through, that prison visit must have been pretty mild in comparison. After this the book takes a turn. He spends a lot of time going over a couple of his first TV documentaries, ‘Meet the Stans’ and ‘Places that Don’t Exist’. All very interesting indeed. He goes over his ‘Equator’ journey. That is where it ends even though he has done a lot more travel docs. Equal parts an inspiring account of Reeve’s determination and adventurous spirit, as well as a field guide to some of the most remote parts of the world, Step by Step is a vivid and fascinating title. Readers may be surprised to learn of his early life struggles with mental health, owing to his onscreen persona, but this traces his journey to inner peace.’ IndependentIn the last decade, he's made a name for himself as British TV's most adventurous presenter. He's hunted with the Bushmen of Kalahari, hung out with biker outlaws in Australia and been taught to fish by the president of Moldova. * Radio Times * I’ve loved watching all of Simon Reeve’s programme on BBC, transporting me to these far flung places, many of them I know I would not dare visit. He is such a natural TV presenter. Even although you are watching the programmes through a screen, it feels like he has taken you with him on his journeys. After ever episode I always say I wish I could be like him (knowing that I could never be like him). But to be able to see so much of the world through your own eyes must be truly incredible. Large parts of the book explain how he and his tiny team put these travel adventures together - far from the notion of a big-budget crew that I envisioned and it also explains that the authenticity of his series is genuine and not an accident. Everything is very personal and Simon himself. In Journeys to Impossible Places, best-selling author and presenter Simon Reeve reveals the inside story of his most astonishing adventures and experiences, around the planet and close to home.

Mu esimene emotsioon (kestis peaaegu pool raamatut) oli tohutu pettumus. Ma olin asunud enda arvates lugema reisiraamatut, aga sattunud hoopis elulooraamatu otsa. Võin selles hooletuses võtta osa süüd küll endale, aga olgem ausad, tutvustus tagakaanel on ikka ka sutike eksitav. I'm a great fan of Simon Reeve's bitter sweet travel programmes - they are a real exploration of the highs and lows that different countries and places have to offer....and although still quite young, he has carved impressive paths round our globe***. I think he researches and writes all of these documentaries himself too. He is far from being just a pretty-faced front man. He also has a natural warmth and interest in people , which brings out the best in those he talks to. I find his programmes alternately inspiring and distressing - but always gripping. Each one is a roller coaster, and I inevitably feel afterwards that I have learnt something new. What better way to broaden the mind than through travel. Bringing history to life has a way of making it far more engaging than sitting reading it in a textbook. Doing your research is important don’t get me wrong. Doing it first allows you to truly appreciate the places you see. I confess that I haven't watched any of Simon Reeve's tv documentaries nor read any of his other books, but I will be seeking them out after reading this account of his life so far. spoj autobiografije i putopisa. nisam prije gledala reeveove dokumentarce za bbc, ali s obzirom da je drugi dio knjige posvećen upravo njima ("meet the stans" (kazahstan, kirgistan, uzbekistan i tadžikistan) i "places that don`t exist" (nagorno karabakh, somaliland, tajvan, transdnjestria)), bacila sam oko i na njih. niti jedan nisam uspjela odgledati do kraja - što zbog stravično loše kvalitete videa, a što jer me nije uspio uvući u priču. To those who are familiar with his work - this book is every bit as good as his documentaries. I highly recommend it. His book ‘Step by Step’ traces the story of his life and some of his best travel tales to date. From a brush with death (Malaria) to some of the lowest lows of his teenage years we see the story of how a boy becomes a man. In a very open way, we get to learn how Simon became Simon. How he grew into himself.
