About this deal

In August 2018, the band issued new versions of their five Creation Records era albums which had been remastered at Abbey Road Studios. To celebrate the reissues, the band also announced Songs from Teenage Fanclub: The Creation Records Years, a four-city UK tour during late October to mid-November in which they would play three nights each in Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and London, with each night's setlist covering different periods of the Creation-era discography, [14] and featuring former drummers Brendan O'Hare and Paul Quinn participating, in which both drummers would respectively perform the albums and B-sides they had originally recorded. [15] [16] These gigs would be Gerard Love's last with the group, [16] as he separated from the band due to differences in opinion on their future touring plans, later revealed to be a reluctance to fly frequently around the world for live performances. The album opens with The Concept, which has the lyrics: “She wears denim wherever she goes / Says she’s gonna buy some records by the Status Quo.” I liked the idea of referencing them because if you wanted to be cool you never would. I could have referenced the Moving Sidewalks instead and people would have thought: “What a wanker.” I’ve not seen the film Young Adult, but I know that Charlize Theron sings The Concept in it. That’s pretty crazy to think she knows the song.

Before its release, there were no real hints that TFC were capable of putting-out something as mighty. Their earlier albums; the debut A Catholic Education and their follow-up, The King were only intermittently exciting. The effortless melodies that have since become the hallmark of all TFC records might still have been evident, but they were too often lost amidst a grungier sound.Norman Blake formed the two-person band Jonny with Euros Childs. In 2012, Blake also formed a Canadian-based supergroup with Joe Pernice and Mike Belitsky called The New Mendicants.

As years go, 1991 was a big one for Creation Records. While Teenage Fanclub were putting the finishing touches to Bandwagonesque, My Bloody Valentine were readying Loveless and Primal Scream were about to make good on their early ragged promise with the blissed-out kaleidoscopic Screamadelica. Creation Records boss Alan McGee believed so passionately in those three records that he put his own mortgage up as collateral, quite literally betting his house on a trio of bands who would pave the way for the label’s later game-changing success with Oasis. Walsh, Ben (25 November 2016). "Teenage Fanclub, Electric Ballroom, London, review: A joyous, generous gig from the enduring, uplifting indie-poppers". The Independent . Retrieved 24 June 2022. In 2000, Bandwagonesque was voted number 386 in Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums. [20] In 2013, NME ranked Bandwagonesque at number 115 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. [21] In 1991, the year that saw the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind, widely regarded as one of the most iconic and influential albums of that year, that decade and probably the last fifty years, Spin opted to anoint Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub (TFC) as their album of the year, leaving Nevermind to trail behind in a disappointing third place.a b Unterberger, Andrew (7 April 2015).
