About this deal

The slow-burning and building relationship between Winnie and Byron is my favorite aspect of this book. They steadily progressed from acquaintances to friends and then lovers which left me with no room to argue that this may be the best 'friend to lover' trope I've read. Byron was always prepared to devote himself to Winnie, despite Winnie didn't believe she was capable of being loved. The way they both are willing to give and take as they embark on their new relationship is something I relished myself. Although you may be in two minds given that both of the characters are inexperienced and virgins but Reid portrayed their insecurities and conversance as bona fide and genuine.

Think for a second.” She pushed me toward the elevator. “If you delete it, it might become a whole thing. He’s a famous guy who millions of people are starving to know more about. He has no social media and suddenly he’s on TikTok with you? And this isn’t like your lab video from Friday, this is you two together, acting like you’re close friends crushing on each other. We need to call him—together—and tell him. But first we need him to answer his damn phone.” Amelia nodded at her own assertion while stabbing the elevator call button with her index finger.

My Book Notes

I almost liked this, or perhaps it is better to say I liked it but there were a lot of things I found issue with (and I'm going to make a list). And that’s all I’m going to tell you. Just know that this story had such charm and such tenderness to it that I could barely stand to put it down for five minutes. I also loved the overall message of not being afraid to step outside your comfort zone.

The truth is, they have nothing in common. She's a public school science teacher with stars in her eyes, and he's a pretentious, joyless double PhD turned world-famous best-selling fiction author. She loves sharing her passion for promulgating women in STEM careers and building community via social media, and he eschews all socialization, virtual or otherwise. She's looking for a side hustle to help pay down a mountain of student debt, and his financial portfolio is the stuff of fiduciary wet dreams. So why are they faking a #bestfriend relationship for millions of online spectators? I’m so glad we got to have a dual point of view for this story, without it – without hearing Byron’s inner monologue, reasoning, wishes and desires, I think we would have been deprived of something truly authentic and heartfelt. Having our hero share those hidden pieces of himself felt vital to the overall story. I loved how he didn’t have an overwhelming amount of chapters, an intention I’m sure, to run parallel with his character’s reluctance to put himself out there. It also meant his voice didn’t drown out Winnie’s. We were able to love and anticipate Byron and Winnie’s interactions but also see Winnie as a separate entity as we got to know her through each of her chapters. A strong, clever and capable protagonist who could stand on her own. Have friends. Enjoy people. Love her job. Have her own hidden depths and wants and desires. Her own hang ups and insecurities. Be real.

Help

Byron Visser was the Swiss chocolate of eye candy. I could be a good friend to him and still think he was sexy as Hades and twice as broody. Soooo... I think it's too late to gatekeep this, right? And I'm not sure if I'm serving any justice with this review as I don't think there will be enough words to put how stellar this book had been. Not just for the romance, but also for the amazing writing and care Reid put through with this one. “So you a little bit like me.”

I just wanted to stay in this Winnie and Byron world as they came to really KNOW each other and find love in the process. The plot was weird. sometimes funny, sometimes cringe (ahsjdh i'm so eloquent i know😭). basically, Winnie wants to do some TikTok challenges to expand her online audience, and Byron volunteers for the job. so they agree to pretend they're best friends who may or may not like each other for these videos, but in reality they're not pretending shit 😏 it made for some cute moments, but ehhh i wasn't a huge fan. Sometimes, it takes a public audience to reveal the truth of private feelings, and rarely—very rarely—you should believe what you see online. I’ve loved you for years. You are the stars in the sky, the start and the finish. I’ll die loving you, wanting you, and the torture of you is better than the bliss of anyone else.” When a little tit for tat situation presents itself, these two enter a best friends-with-benefits situation that puts them spending more time together.Yes, they’ve known each other for years, but they’re not even friendly. Winnie considers them more like casual, distant acquaintances who find each other barely tolerable, especially when he's being condescending (which is all the time).
