About this deal

iPhoneXSmax has two cameras with fixed lens at 26, 52mm equivalent, Oly's zoom power is 100mm equivalent. But you could use a 2x add on lens to reach that with your iPhone and keep much better IQ than the Oly. Spanning wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths, the built-in 4x optical zoom lens covers a 25-100mm equivalent range and has a bright f/2 maximum aperture to suit working in low-light conditions. Additionally, image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 2.5 stops to further aid in creating sharp imagery with slower shutter speeds. As photographers, we can find moments so powerful that lens flare isn’t necessary. And, we can look for moments so strong that the viewer will overlook high ISO noise in the photo. Whatever the shortcomings of our cameras, we as photographers always fall shorter. Whatever their weaknesses, our cameras are just fine. We need to increase our skills and know that, even if there was a perfect camera, it could only be used by an imperfect photographer.

The TG-6 will go on sale from early July along with a number of new useful accessories for the expandable Tough photography system. Tough performance in any environment: Built for adventure The OM System Tough TG-7 features an improved grip, a USB-C connector, an improved LCD screen, interval and time-lapse modes, support for vertical video shooting, support for the RM-WR1 weatherproof wireless remote and updated scene modes. Just like its predecessor, the TG-6 includes a 12 megapixel 1/2.3-inch sensor, along with the same 25-100mm (equivalent) f/2.0-f/4.9 lens (that’s a 4x optical zoom). The camera has a range of shooting modes, and for advanced users, there’s even the ability to capture images in raw format. The great-value price includes a six-month warranty extension5 if new owners register their camera at www.my.olympus.eu.There's a burst capture mode, supporting speeds up to 20fps for very short durations, about 9 shots. It will keep going, but drops to about 6fps. It's still useful for capturing short bursts of action, and you can set the burst rate to a lower speed if you'd like. It may sound like we’re down on the Olympus TG-6 – but that’s really not the case. Having an f/2 lens puts it ahead of basically any other tough compact in terms of low-light performance and versatility, and its optical zoom lens and ergonomic form factor give it solid advantages over a GoPro. It’s just important to view the camera in context. It won’t produce incredible, mind-blowing images that can be blown up on billboards, but it will do exactly what it’s designed to do – produce decent-looking images in challenging conditions for a fairly reasonable price. Olympus Tough TG-6 review: video An evening adventure used to mean hauling a heavy bag filled with gear. I never knew which gear I would need for sure, so I always brought too much. Eventually, I just stopped going on spontaneous adventures because it became too much of a chore. The Olympus Tough TG-6 replaces all that stuff I used to haul around. Gear is no longer the hindrance it used to be. The technical specs A lot of competition still exists in the compact camera market, despite the ever increasing threat of smartphone cameras. Indeed, shoot with the TG-6 side-by-side with one of the latest and greatest smartphones and you’ll probably find that the smartphone beats it in a lot of scenarios. Crucially, however, there will be some scenarios that your smartphone just can’t be used in - such as underwater. You also don’t need to worry about breakages or damage, which it makes it suitable for rough-and-tumble action photography.

Overall, the Olympus TG-6 is quite probably the best tough compact camera on the market, offering a solid range of features that will appeal to a diverse group of people - but it comes at a price. For those in the first group, the TG-6's auto mode can handle just about every situation, and its numerous scene modes are well organized. Going underwater? Just choose the 'fish' spot on the mode dial, where you'll find five choices that match the situation you're in. It is a shame that Olympus did not create a simplified version of its menu system for more novice users, who are likely to be overwhelmed by the options and organization. At first, I thought it was a problem that there was no shutter speed mode on the TG-6. But then I realized that it wasn’t really necessary. You just have to know how to work around it. While the image quality from the TG-6 is fine, modern smartphones will surpass it in most situations, though once downsized to social media resolutions, it's less noticeable. But, remember, your phone isn't exactly rugged. While out-of-camera JPEGs have pleasant colors *, the lens just isn't very sharp and too much noise reduction is applied. Turning down the 'noise filter' option helps a bit, but if you're up to the challenge of processing the results, shooting Raw is the way to get the most out of the TG-6.In the end, it’s not about the technical specs of a camera, but what those technical specs let us do as creative people and photographers.

The Olympus Tough TG-6 is a compact photo camera with a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor, providing a total of 12.7 megapixels. It features a 4x optical zoom, with a minimum focal length of 25mm and a maximum focal length of 100mm. The lens structure consists of 9 elements in 7 groups, with three aspheric elements. The minimum aperture number is 2, while the maximum aperture number is 4.9. The camera has a 40.5mm filter size and a TFT display.

Lastly, the TG-6's host of close-up features not only allow for capturing subjects 1cm (0.4") away: the 'digital microscope' mode lets you zoom in up to four times more, though with a reduction in image quality. Olympus sells a ring light and flash diffuser to add flexibility to your macro photography. In-camera time-lapses can be recorded using an interval timer, with 1-second to 24-hour intervals for up to 299 consecutive images. The rest of the navigation pad has direct access to different controls, again which is sometimes dependent on the shooting mode you’re in. The up button controls exposure compensation, while the left button can be used to bring up the aperture control when in aperture priority (then you use the up and down buttons to move between the given apertures). The right button gives you the different flash modes to choose from, while the down button accesses drive mode, or the timer options.

You can change the magnification level to 1x, 2x or 4x by pressing the arrow pad Right button. Up to 44.4x (35 mm equivalent: 28x) is possible when using the zoom simultaneously. The TG-6 is a pretty standard point-and-shoot from a handling perspective. Its handgrip is decently deep, and the camera ships with a cloth wrist strap that you can use on land and under water. Not to mention that leaving expensive cameras around is a hazard with a house full of kids and their rowdy friends. With the flash turned off, the Olympus TG-6 doesn't show any obvious signs of vignetting at wide-angle or full zoom. However, it does occur when the flash is on. Certainly at wide-angle, at least. It's less so at full zoom, but on a plain white wall, it's still noticeable. As the name implies, this is the sixth camera in the Tough TG series from Olympus. First released in 2019, it retains a formula that has remained basically the same since the TG-1 – pairing a 1/2.3-inch sensor with a 25-100mm equivalent lens, providing an imaging combination that isn't going to blow anyone away but works well enough for photography in the water and out.
