If there’s one piece of advice I’d recommend here, it would be listening to audiobooks – particularly when reading to entertain rather than to understand. Personally, I’ve found audiobooks to be pretty awesome when working out or driving in my car, as this allows me to incorporate ‘reading’ into my life where I’d previously have been “too busy”. There’s literally no excuse for not reading. The book also has pictures to make you have a better understanding of body language like how to read someone from his legs movements or to understand someone's thoughts or emotions from the facial expressions. There is also how to read fake expressions with some fun exercises. Chapter seven is about “lie detection” and the truth and myth of this topic. One thing I liked about this book is that the author is quite forthcoming about the limited support for some of the ideas that are conveyed, as well as the limitations of what these tools can do for one. Many authors of this type of work suggest that these tactics are iron-clad science, which isn’t the case. The most controversial of these approaches is NLP. Neuro-Linguistic Programming has an extremely stalwart following among many people ranging from salespeople to therapists. However, NLP has not fared well when subjected to scientific investigation. NLP supporters suggest this is because investigators are fighting a straw man by considering oversimplified claims that were never made by Bandler and Grinder (the NLP founders.) As an example, NLP claims that a person will tend to look one direction when remembering and another when imagining. Some within the NLP suggest this is the basis of lie detection (if a respondent looks as though they are imagining versus recalling, they must be involved in a fabrication.) While I’m skeptical about using some of the approaches presented in this book as the basis of one’s behavior, I appreciate that the author is forthcoming about what is controversial and what is well-supported. Fexeus takes the view that one should try it out for oneself, and draw one’s own conclusions. I also think the inclusion of an ethical discussion is essential as many of these books come off as kind of creepy – not to mention overblown. If you’re looking for a book on nonverbal communication, rapport-building, and persuasion, this one does a fine job. Become a listener that listens to understand, not a listener that listens to respond. The other person will easily be able to tell the difference and may close themselves off if they don’t feel proper reception of their feelings and energy. Listen more than you talk for maximum understanding. Pay Attention to Emotion

Furthermore, our written summary of the book is going to be more comprehensive than a couple of sentences. Think about how the structure and ideas flow in general, helping to guide us to the given conclusion. is to be able to understand what goes on in someone’s head by observing their nonverbal communication, because all your emotions and your feelings and your important thoughts will be displayed by minute signals in your facial muscles and how you move and how you speak. So just by taking note of that, you can quite accurately know what goes on inside someone else’s head. You won’t be able to know what color they’re thinking of, that I can do on stage as an illusionist. But you will have a much more practical information. Henrik Fexeus is a Swedish mentalist, author and TV-host. Since 2005 he is a frequent guest, as expert on body language and non-verbal communication, in television and newspapers including for Expressen at the Swedish Crown Princess Victoria's wedding and for Aftonbladet during the US SuperTuesday 2016.After his academic education in philosophy, Henrik Fexeus rapidly became a communications specialist. Fexeus is now an appreciated performer of edutainment. He has brought a whole new meaning to the expression mind reading and reveals skills in nonverbal communication, body language, psychological manipulation and psychological influence. He is currently touring with his mind reading show and has been hosting his own TV-show at Sweden’s largest broadcaster. The first step of reading more is having the willingness to read more. And falling in love with the act of reading itself. It took me a bit to get through this book, but it was still very interesting and informative. I sure would love to see the TED talk version, though. Just sayin. :)

While we use the cues of facial expressions and body language to read minds constantly without realizing it, there are other skills and techniques we can use to get past those exterior barriers and understand what is going on deep inside the minds of others. Skills You Need For Mind Reading

This isn’t a book about telepathy, clairvoyance, or any other form of ESP. It’s a book about nonverbal communication, and how to use it to both recognize the true mental and emotional states of others and to be able to influence said states. It draws on a range of findings and approaches, including those of Paul Ekman, NLP (neuro-linguistic programming), Robert Caldini, and Antonio Damasio.

The easiest way to plant an anchor in somebody is to wait until he or she is in the emotional state you're after" I enjoyed this so much! The bits about understanding how our bodies work and display in times of stress, fear, excitement, aroused, etc. was fascinating! I found the bits about establishing rapport with someone very helpful! (Rapport is something that would be beneficial with a boss or family member - someone to whom their presence is a fact of life or a threat.) In the veracity stage, our task is to constructively analyse. To show where the author has been uninformed, misinformed, illogical or incomplete in their arguments, clearly explaining what the shortcomings are and how the author’s reasoning could be improved. If we can’t do that then our criticism is unlikely to be constructive or valid. In many ways, improving the way we read is the number one skill that can change our lives for the better. The Importance of Effective & Efficient Reading The third level of reading is about examining the book in-depth. I’ll be honest – I’m not great at this level of reading, but I’m always trying to improve.Readers will discover how our brains are wired for empathy and how mirroring the behaviour of others can lead to stronger connections. Fexeus also delves into the psychology of persuasion, shedding light on the techniques used by politicians, salespeople, and even cult leaders to influence others.

As humans, we attempt to read minds every day. We guess the feelings and reactions of others and respond appropriately. Usually, this works if someone is displaying their true emotions. However, if someone has a good poker face, how can we know? In this category, we read books purely for enjoyment. It’s how we spend the majority of our time as readers. There are no rules and there’s no need to think too deeply or critically about what we’re reading. The goal is simple: we can relax and immerse ourselves in the story. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. With systematic skimming our aim is to decide whether or not this is a book we actually want to spend the time reading. I like to ask myself “is this one of the greats that I’d happily spend the next few hours of my life looking at?”. If the answer is anything less than “hell yes!” then I won’t bother reading it.At this point, you’re ready to uncover more about the person. What should you talk about? Well, this is determined simply by what thoughts immediately rush to your mind. What you are thinking may be exactly what they are thinking, so let the conversation guide itself based on your intuition.
