About this deal

This is admittedly the first self help book I’ve gotten into, but I found it interesting that it was mixed with poetry. I like poetry by itself, but I’m unclear on whether I like it mixed in with something that is supposed to self help. What was confusing to me was the poetry sections seemed to be mellow dramatic, and I felt at times the author was trying too hard to sound poetic. There were many repetitive thoughts and phrases in this book that may have been out there to drive a point home, but I became bored with it. Thugs hurled chairs, bottles and stools grabbed from outside bars and restaurants as violence escalated. Some protesters were involved in scuffles with police while others threw bottles at officers (Photo: Brian Lawless/PA) That being said, there were a couple of parts that I did resonate with. The chapter Why Is Everything Work along with the one towards the end on loneliness were wonderful.

I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Shout out to Penguin Press and Yrsa Daley-Ward.Consumer law protects vulnerable consumers in their economic decision-making. But the characteristics that make a consumer vulnerable are rather vaguely defined. According to the Financial Conduct Authority, a vulnerable consumer is someone who is easily harmed because of their personal situation. But it is clear to me that people with ADHD do have a vulnerability – especially when grappling to come to terms with a new diagnosis. I want to start by saying how much I loved this book. It is self help, yes, but not written in the same dry way as many books of this genre are. The author writes from her own experience and this makes her advice and guidance feel more authentic and enables a deeper connection with her reader. There is passion in the lyrical way this book is written and I felt she was writing from her soul directly to mine. Everything I read resonated with me on some level; reading it felt like coming home. A truly unique book.

Although I’m an omnivore, I like to cook plant-based food when it makes sense. A plant-rich diet is widely accepted as one of the most healthy, and can also be more economical, especially when you practice root-to-fruit eating by using up every last morsel. In this recipe, for instance, flaxseeds and aquafaba take the place of eggs and milk, and are much cheaper. This rather humble pie is food at its most thrifty and nutritious, a filling and economical weekday meal that is also comforting, especially as the cold nights draw in. Eleven Gardai vehicles were either destroyed through arson or very extensively damaged during “huge destruction by a riotous mob”. The How is a self-help book of sorts. It is Yrsa Daley-Ward's inner thoughts and feelings about life and how we can make the most of it, and stay true to ourselves. She says herself, that this book is, in a way, telling people what they already know. And I agree, there was nothing spectacularly new and revolutionary in this book. But I don't think that that took away from the beauty of it. Sometimes we simply need reminders about life and the ups and downs of it and this book provided that. Those of us who work with children might want more out of education, however. We might want to look at what children learn about themselves and their place in the world, and we might want to know how being so strictly controlled at school affects children’s wellbeing and ability to cope when they get into the less structured environment of university or work – one where intrinsic motivation matters. I filled out an online quiz from one of these companies and got an ADHD score of 43 out of 63 – whatever that meant. If I wanted to find out, I needed to open the “personal management plan” that had arrived in my inbox and would apparently give me unique insights into my challenges and help me to better manage my symptoms. But I would need to pay 26p a day. I chose not to sign up, but over the following weeks I received a further 15 messages, each trying to lure me into purchasing the plan with growing discounts – 60% off at first, then 75%.

Expert led, enforced instruction is not the only way to learn, and the evidence that shows that it is the most effective method has clearly defined parameters. If your aim is for all children to learn a specific body of knowledge and retain it, and you are confident that you can motivate children to do so, then direct instruction from an expert with lots of repetition (otherwise known as drilling) may well be effective. If your aim is children who can think critically and creatively, and who are developing their potential as active and diverse human beings, then there is no evidence that drilling them will achieve this. It’s simply not part of the way in which the studies were designed. There is, however, good reason to be sceptical about claims of the utter necessity of all those hours in classrooms, because there is research which shows that children who do not attend school at all learn effectively to the point where they are able to access higher education (Riley, 2020; Fisher, 2021).

I feel like I should say it’s not a bad book, it’s always great to have something to guide your thinking in this exploratory way and I’m sure there are many who will find the contents really helpful; I personally found it quite a relaxing January, bedtime read.
