Night sweats in men can sometimes indicate sleep apnea. With sleep apnea, you stop breathing while sleeping. This can happen many times in a night, but if you sleep alone or if your partner is a sound sleeper, you may not be aware anything has happened. Night Sweat’ by Robert Lowell contains several literary devices. Likewise, there is an anticlimax in the second line of the poem. Here, the “stalled equipment” is a metaphor for the poet’s pen or poetic imagination. There is a personal metaphor in the “tidied room”. Moreover, there is a personification in “creeping damp”. Apart from that, the poet uses enjambment throughout the poem. However, in “wilted white” there is alliteration. There is another important metaphor in the phrase, “my life’s fever”. It’s a reference to the poet’s dead thoughts. The poet also uses anaphora in the first and second sonnet. Moreover, the “urn” symbolizes the body of the poet. It’s the use of metonymy. The image of the soldier is first of all, Gunn has written, “myself, the national serviceman, the ‘clumsy brute in uniform,’ the soldier who never goes to war, whose role has no function, whose battledress is a joke,” but it is also the “attractive and repellant” real soldier, who kills but also quests, like Achilles and Odysseus. Above all, the soldier is the poet, “an existential conqueror, excited and aggressive,” trying to make sense of his absurd situation. Despite the contemporary and even controversial concerns to which he turns his attention, Gunn has always been something of a formalist in an age in which free verse abounds. He frequently employs long-established forms of verse as well as traditional patterns of meter and rhyme, achieving, through the juxtaposition of avant-garde subject matter and classical forms, an effectively startling tone. In “The Man with Night Sweats,” he alternates four quatrains with four couplets to produce a unique pattern of juxtaposition. This pattern represents a combination of traditional form and innovative alterations by the poet. The lines of both the quatrains and the couplets are iambic trimeter with several effective variations in the beats. Idiopathic hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating that happens for no clear medical reason.
