About this deal

I really loved Katy Brent's first book, which I still think is the best in the recently mushrooming "female vigilante story with humour" genre, so I was excited to have the opportunity to read her latest book. And I have to say Brent has followed up an excellent debut novel with an equally good follow up in this, her second book. Her trademark darkness and sarcastic humour are both displayed to great advantage in the story of Molly, who finds herself - in the ugliest way possible - a viral phenomenon, to her utter, undiluted horror. There’s only one thing stopping me from dying of shame. I need to find a killer. Praise for The Murder After the Night Before: Next we have the plant-based meat of this story: the revenge murders. Again, love the concept. And obviously for a story like this, yeeting of disbelief is required. But the murders were TOO laughably solvable. Homegirl was using Tinder to set up these men and you're telling me police didn't cotton on to that? Ok. At least try to do some basic forensic countermeasures like use a burner phone. Even Finlay Donovan was tighter than this.

Molly Monroe wakes up the morning after her work Christmas party with the hangover to end all hangovers. Her head is pounding, her memory is a blank, and there is a strange man in her bed. And unfortunately, that's just the beginning. Because whatever happened the night before, Molly is now trending on social media and her best friend is dead.

A flawlessly plotted murder mystery. Devilishly brilliant. I loved it!' Sarah Bonner, author of Her Perfect Twin Fast-paced with the story unfolding at lightning speed, Molly’s world is completely thrown upside down after she discovers her friend’s body. This book is a story about manipulation, the influence of the wealthy, the power of social media and how in the case of Molly, a ten second video going viral has devastating consequences for those involved. The brand name dropping. Does the author get commission for that? Annoying. I get it that she is rich but I don’t care for your gazillion of brand names and amount of followers. I'd recommend this book to people who enjoyed the show Dexter and looking for a woman's take on it.

No one flinches when women get murdered by men in fiction, but I have a hunch some people could get worked up about this book. Because the author has turned the tables on us and on society. It's not just women who have to watch their step in Kitty's London, men better be careful too. Not something that the patriarchy is used to and it may cause a bit of a snit. If you are seeking a captivating and immersive book that provides a unique form of distraction, then this is a must-read to add to your TBR list! I love Brent’s sense of humour and there are so many laugh out loud moments delivered with a punch throughout this dark and at times, disturbing read. The main character, Molly, is put in a very compromising position (no spoilers!) but her sarcasm and sense of humour really helps to lighten what is a dark topic. I know this is a satire. I know it’s not meant to be serious. But boy, it was insta dislike for me. I hated the main character. I loathed her. She was so righteous and just not real. Nothing about her was relatable. If she was a bit more down to earth, a bit less of this “I am a loaded influencer “ stuff… maybe I am too old for that influencer scene… she lied about having a miscarriage ~ she was never pregnant. This really rubbed me the wrong way. This is something that should never be lied about or joked about or anything about. And they were barely dating, so didn't seem plausible anyway. The side characters. Each and every one of them felt like a caricature or a parody. None of them were properly fledged out. I also disliked how a lot of them were introduced with their name and then their follower count. Yes, I get that the author was probably trying to empathize Kitty's priorities there, but I still found it dumb. I’ve woken up with the hangover from hell, a stranger in my bed, and I’ve gone viral for the worst reasons. Whilst I'm not one who is really bothered about trigger warnings, this book should come with a number: murder, suicide, sexual assault, addiction, trauma, misogyny. Kate’s is a tale of unexpected strength and resilience, of humanity’s defiance in the face of a terrible predator’s gaze, and inevitably, of savagery and death.
